To Whom It May Concern:
On behalf of all of the partners of Baker Street Capital Management, I am pleased to endorse the candidacy of Mark Lee. The
responsibility of writing this letter of merit has befallen upon me due to the close level of professional interaction I have undergone with
this candidate during his nascent career, and consequently, our professional relationship should well suit me for the task of outlining his
superior professional achievement and personal aptitudes.
Baker Street Capital Management is a hedge fund based in Midtown Manhattan that specializes within the strategies of a Long/Short
Equity concentration and operates in the fashion of a “quant shop”, with the investment thesis procured through a proprietary quantitative
ranking system.
This past spring, Mark took the initiative to interview at our firm. Through an extremely competitive selection process, he received an
offer from us to join on a full-time basis. To provide a cursory overview of the firm’s 8 year history of talent recruitment, we traditionally
recruit from the most competitive schools in the New York/New Jersey region, including universities such as Princeton, Columbia,
Dartmouth, Penn, and NYU Stern, though of course, there are exceptions. Throughout the entire interview process, Mark presented an
indelible impression of confidence, maturity, and just as significant, intelligence. His impressions have not failed him since, and since the
first day on the job, he has never looked back.
Immediately upon hire, Mark was placed in a group with two analysts and one associate, and also worked on several projects directly
linked with the CFO, COO, and the Portfolio Manager himself. From day one, his functions enveloped the entire array of functions
forming the foundation of this firm. These include working directly with the systems currently in place at the firm that are integral to the
daily activities for achieving above average returns for our portfolio, including for instance, the Risk Management Systems and the Quant
System. Additionally, he was given the heavy responsibilities of being the “helping-hand” to every single employee within this firm.
It is important to bring up the gritty and intense nature of such a role new hires play in the development of this firm. The purpose of
affixing the new hire to such multifarious apprenticeship to all employees is simple. Firstly, it allows for quick acclimation to the entirety
of the daily operations involved in the firm, from the mundane back office duties, to the more superlatively analytical functions of the
equity analysts or the PM. Such a role absolutely necessitates a keen mind and a robust work ethic to contribute successfully to the firm.
Secondly, it introduces the new hire to the realities of the finance industry, or more specifically, the time-sensitive nature of information
and the incessant pressures of performance – in these characterizations I shall include the barking of orders by the trader, or the constant
drumbeat of orders placed by surrounding employees. It requires a tough skin, and excellent time management and multi-tasking skills to
accomplish this feat, which by no means, especially in combination with the first aim, is no easy task. It is then that it should be no
wonder to inform you that many previous hires have quit or been let go, whether it was due to lack of performance, or simply because
they could not handle the role. Mark has successfully overridden these steep early obstacles, and became a successful contributor to this
firm, and has since continued on to more highly analytical tasks.
A brief summation of independent research tasks should suffice to delineate his analytical achievements. In his duration at this firm, he
has improved the Quantitative system, the Risk Management System, and even tackled a legal case within his own individual effort. He
has certainly displayed his affinity towards theoretic thinking and applying them in practical terms. In collaboration with the other
employees of the firm, he has already aided in increasing the operational efficiency of this firm.
In conclusion, my professional opinion of Mark is none other than high marks. He is a focused, determined, and tremendously intelligent
individual, and has been one of the top performing hires at this firm in a long while. We are confident that he will be an asset to your
team. Please feel free to contact me directly at 212-***-**** to assist you in the selection process for Mark.

Shawn Lee
