PROJECT WORK
Bachelor’s Degree Project:
I have done my project in Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Ramachandrapuram, Hyderabad on “STUDY AND
OPTIMISATION OF GLAND LEAKAGE LOSSES IN STEAM TURBINES” for the partial fulfillment of the award of the
degree Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from 15th December 2007 to 15th March 2008.
Description: Glands are the most important components of steam turbines. During operation, many parts of the steam turbine
are subjected to high pressure and high temperatures. This results in certain wastage of steam due to leakage losses at external
glands. In our project, we calculated the leakage losses using two different equations namely Stodola’s Equation and Traupel’s
Equation. Stodola’s equation mainly gives high gland leakage quantity and Traupel’s equation gives least leakage quantity. By
comparing different parameters, graphs are drawn and conclusions are made regarding the leakage losses, gland clearance and
pressure before and after the gland. Through these calculations, we can increase the total internal power and efficiency of a
steam turbine. By calculating the leakage losses, we can also estimate axial thrust. By this, efficiency of the turbine can be
increased and the mass of the leaked steam can be utilized. Finally, we compared the theoretical values with the practical values.
We found that the results are almost the same in both the cases.
