Professional Experience
•March, 2008 - Present System administrator, IBM
• Supporting hundreds of Sun servers of various hardware architectures and running
Solaris versions from 2.5 through 10 and resolving hardware, software, and user issues in
timely manner.
• Working closely with the application teams and hardware vendors to resolve any
hardware problems.
• Sharing knowledge with the original team members to ensure better coverage of all
servers.
• Performing backups and restorations of all the IBM servers in Morristown, NJ and
solving problems promptly.
1
•May, 2002- February, 2008 System administrator, IBM, Morristown (client AT&T
location), New Jersey
• End-to-end system and user support of UNIX systems (about 30 servers of Sun
Solaris, Linux, HP-UX, and SGI Irix) running various data marts.
• Working with various teams to successfully implement application migration from
old SGI servers and HP servers to new Sun servers in very tight time frame. In the process,
many technical and communications problems were overcome. Detailed documentation
helped greatly in the later migrations.
• OS (Solaris and Irix) installation and upgrade, firmware installation and upgrade.
Started the planning of new Daylight Saving Time early and thoroughly to ensure all the
servers, switches, software, firmware, and applications conform to new DST.
• Installing Solaris 10 and setting up zones for different applications.
• Capacity planning regarding servers and storage systems to handle performance and
huge amount of data.
• Setting up new storage systems (Clariion, Hitachi Thunder 9200, 9520, AMS 200,
and AMS 500) to meeting expected growth.
• Setting up private gigabit network to improve NFS performance.
• Setting up SAN to better use existing storage.
• Automating regular SA tasks with cron jobs and scripting, especially in perl.
• Software installation, configuration, upgrade, and trouble-shooting, including
NetBackup, and Veritas Volume Manager.
• Design and implementation of backup environment with large amount of data. By
reconfiguring NetBackup, I dramatically reduced the time needed for restoration (hours to
minutes) and increased backup throughput.
• Serving as technical lead in various SA areas to help the effective use of resource in
the whole organization
•July, 2000-April, 2002 System administrator and production support, IBM,
Middletown (client AT&T location), New Jersey
• Serving the same capacity as with AT&T, as a result of outsourcing to IBM
• Participating the planning of new hardware architecture for migrating BPP (Business
Provisioning Platform) Facility to become a web-based application
• Setting up six work centers for the application, most of time within a week instead of
the usual two weeks
• Resolving multiple problems in remotely setting up a work center for two
applications overseas
• Single-handedly completing the planning, testing, and deployment of Axent (later
called Symantec Enterprise Security Manager) and fixing the vulnerabilities on all the servers
(over 60) I supported
• On-call during off hours, especially after 9/11 for extended production support
• My prompt responses to user requests won high praises from users, developers, and
testers
• Because of the changes in the SA team, I took over SA, Oracle DBA, and production
support for the application, originally done by five people
•May, 1999-June, 2000 System administrator and production support, AT&T,
Middletown, New Jersey
Worked as a member of SA team administering a three-tier system with more than 1200
computers and 60 servers running BPP (Business Provisioning Platform) Facility and other
2
applications. Servers included Sun Enterprises, Ultras, and Sparcs, and clients mostly Ultras
and Sparcs.
• Using JumpStart to set up Sun servers and workstations in dozens in various work
centers around the country
