PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER, Nashville, TN 2002 to current
Xingwu James Yuan 615-***-**** Page 2
System Monitoring Engineer (titles held: Network Support Specialist, Network Support
Technician)
System integration experience with Network Node Manager, Operation manager, Service
Center/manager, Telalert, AlarmPoint and other databases and applications.
Monitor strategic methods developing and daily enterprise network monitoring by NNM,
OM and other tools, Created network devices inventory used by management and a variety of
groups.
Network data collection by using SNMP, Bash, and Perl shell programming. Used IOS
commands and Solarwinds to identify the interested instances; Found the right OIDs in the
related MIBs; Standardized switches’ IOS images and configurations. Normalized the
indexes in MIBs for all of switches. Identified the difference of OIDs for the same instance
from different model switches. Finally, saved millions for the organization.
Migrated from NNM 7.1 to 7.5 on Solaris 9. Found the differences of configurations and
functionalities from the two versions. Concluded a safe and efficient way to complete the
migration.
NNM7.5 on Solaris 9 to NNM 8i windows 2003 server VMware environment and individual
windows 2003 server. Evaluated NNM 8i and iSPI for performance and wrote the report of
the comparison of these two versions under the different environment.
Setup Solaris and installed NNM 7.xx and other applications like Telalert and SNMP utilities
for a testing environment.
Setup Red Linux and installed MySQL and the interested utilities. Studied storing the
network data in MySQL relational database. Concluded pros and cons of relational database
vs. RRD database.
Installed OpManager on windows XP and initialized the discovery of the selected networks
and the network devices and tested the functions.
Applied Opnet to our network to analyze the performance of the different tiers of the
networks.
DNS/DHCP server and Nortel’s NetID system administrator. Prepared reports of IP address
usage every week and recommended changes to accommodate the need of customers.
Assigned IP and DNS to the end users and network infrastructural devices. Redesigned DNS
name system and created the name conversion standard for infrastructural devices to
integrate with inventory database.
VPN user accounts management for the countrywide authorized users of Vanderbilt Medical
Center. Included 1800 dial number accounts.
Reengineered CER for Cisco devices. Included uplinks fiber connections, distributed switch
and access switches reconfiguration, end user connection cable patches on the racks.
Daily network operation involved in new devices deployment, troubleshooting, change,
update and maintenance for networks used by 70,000 end users and two data centers within
established SLA/OLA in HP Service Manger (Center/Desk).
