IBM CORPORATION, 2000 – 2008: SENIOR MANAGING CONSULTANT
Led or co-led engagements in the US and in Europe focused on defi ning business objectives, investment cases and
designing technology applications for companies in the Media and Entertainment industry. Specialized in working with
information providers and publishers such as Dow Jones, Associated Press, ADVO, The New York Times and
Tribune Corporation. Notable engagements include:
Wolters Kluwer (Chicago, IL): Engagement Manager, Content Strategy
Led a team of four consultants in a four-month assessment to analyze business processes and associated
technology to reduce costs and better enable the client to more easily repurpose its books and periodicals for online
consumption. The resulting business case (Investment and cost savings through transformation) yielded ROI of mid
seven figures over three years.
• Qualified and quantified technology, organization and process changes necessary to help the client prevent
continued erosion of its vertical publishing business.
• Assessed the client’s content transition strategy and developed a roadmap to hasten the conversion process t o
reduce the complexity of document conversions and thereby reduce time to market for online products.
McGraw-Hill Corporation (Hightstown, NJ): Technology Lead, Content Platform Redesign
Over a six-month period led technology teams of IBM and client sta ff as part of a broader engagement within a
vertical line of business. In so doing:
• During solution outline and with larger team, developed and presented senior management with a selection of
high IRR initiatives including required investment case, necessary process changes and organization
realignment.
• Identified and analyzed technology gaps in a legacy content management platform and created technical
recommendations for change in support of each initiative.
• During subsequent detailed design phase, led client and IBM staff to identify and prioritize business processes
requirements, technical requirements (data model, usability requirements, optimized navigation, system
components, platform architecture and interfaces) as well as functional and non-functional requirements.
Trinity Mirror Group (Birmingham, England): Senior Consultant, Business Transformation
During a four-month business transformation project with media company Trinity Mirror in the United Kingdom,
assisted the client in realigning costs and resources to revenues for its Midlands region. With larger team, identified
seven-figure savings (USD) over an 18-month period.
• As part of the project, developed a self-funded business case for equipping field sales staff with mobility
technology and which included high level requirements, deployment schedule and pilot success definitions.
• By leveraging existing technology investments, assisted the client in defining self-serve business processes to
secure more advertising revenue from new and existin g advertisers without increasing staff.
Swets Blackwell (Lisse, Netherlands): Engagement Manager, Web Site Development
Led a team of eight consultants and architects in a four-month IBM WebSphere development subproject for the world
leader in bulk journal subscription management.
• Served as both a day-to-day project manager and subject matter consultant, working with the client and IBM
team to design new business processes and evaluate the impact of automation on the organization.
• Developed B2B requirements, architecture and navigation to better enable Swets Blackwell clients to easily find,
package and buy offerings.
Dow Jones (Princeton, NJ): Subject Matter Consultant, Content Strategy Definition
In a three-month engagement conducted an analysis of key Dow Jones content management processes and
technologies for the Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones News Wires and WSJ.com
• Identified business processes and technical bottlenecks that were costing Dow Jones well over $1.5 million each
year - in just one area.
• Made specific recommendations supported by a demonstrable business case and roadmap to revise the
processes, implement new technologies and realign and redeploy resources.
IBM CORPORATION, 1996 – 2000: SOLUTIONS MARKETING MANAGER
As part of start-up solutions organization, innovated vertical marketplace offerings of IBM and business partner
components and services to increase mind share and market share for a then -new IBM business area. Notable
achievements include:
• Led lifecyle development and go-to-market activities (functional requirements, marketing, communications,
collateral, pricing, sales aids) of NewsFlow, the first Lotus Notes-based content management system tailored for
news writers and editors.
• Led marketplace development of automation software for large newspaper mailrooms.
• With teams from IBM Research and IBM Global Services, helped to define marketing plans for deploying first -of-
a-kind IBM and business partner technology for Interactive Television.
• Carried out a technology exchange with a major publishing technology company in Beijing, China.
• Grew several business partner relationships with Dalai (Mexico) and DeskNet (New York)
ATEX MEDIA SOLUTIONS, 1983 - 1996: SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER
Prior to joining IBM, held marketing and project man agement responsibilities for Atex Media Solutions, specializing in
developing and deploying large-scale editorial and advertising publishing systems for newspapers and magazines.
Notable projects include:
Florida Today ( Melbourne, FL): Project Manager / Applications Engineer, Platform Deployment
• Led a complex project to install content management platforms (~200 users, $2 million) for Gannett -owned
Florida Today under a fixed deadline tied to relocation to a new facility. Deployed duplicate platforms at b oth old
and new facilities and designed an innovative migration strategy to manage transaction data transition during the
relocation. In so doing Atex reused the migration strategy for other clients in similar situations. Met a major
milestone in that the system was live prior to a new plant grand opening and birthday gala for USA Today
founder Al Neuhart.
New York Times Regional Newspapers (Atlanta, GA): Project Manager, Platform Deployment
• Led the implementation of editorial and advertising platforms (average 50 to 75 users, $750,000 each) for
several titles in the southeast United States. Also acted as applications engineer to tailor systems to client
specifications.
News Corporation (London, England): Application Engineer, Large Platform Deployment
• Over a four-month period, led a key application track as part of a team that deployed a 500 -user platform for
News International titles The Times, The Sunday Times, News Of The World and The Sun.
