WORK EXPERIENCE
Controls Engineer – Globalogix, Houston Texas. The project is for Shell Oil, in
Wyoming, a natural gas field. I am leading the HMI/SCADA development for a large
water treatment plant/naural gas processing expansion; almost all work is done at my
home in New Hampshire. January 2009 - Present
Test Engineer - Kepware, Portland Maine My role was development and testing of an
OPC driver for Beckhoff PLC connectivity. June 2008 - December 2008
Staff Senior Controls Engineer for Allen Bradley architecture - LT Software, Portsmouth
NH. This company is a Siemens/Allen Bradley integrator, providing product
manufacturing support and new equipment design / install throughout the US. My
principal efforts were two-fold; 1- a SCADA training system and a tubing bundler code
re-write. The SCADA trainer presents 22 different SCADA systems from Allen Bradley,
Wonderware, and Siemens on one PC. A selection screen offered screen buttons that
booted any of the SCADA/HMI systems, with the background process running against a
custom built process simulator, unique to each SCADA/HMI. The user could get well
acquainted with any of the plant processes. 2- The tubing bundler was the final step in a
continuous process steel tube mill, which converted steel coil fresh from a steel plant to
tubing, from 2 by 2 inch to 18 by 18 square or round tubing, lengths of 20 to 80 feet. The
bundler organized the tubing at the end of the manufacturing process into banded bundles
suitable for loading onto flatbed truck or rail flat-cars. The bundler combined servo-
hydraulic linear cylinders with electric servo motors, in a number of cascaded electronic
drivetrains. I rewrote the entire software package. March 2007 – January 2008
Senior Motion control Controls Engineer, Vutek, Inc., Meredith NH New product
design/development. Primary focus was the design of a new, large format table printer
(200 square foot table). I did all of the kinematics for this project as well. May 2006 –
January 2007.
Equipment Engineer III, Corning, Inc., Corning NY, other states in the US, primarily
Asia (Korea, Japan, Taiwan). Manager for Software Development, plant equipment
installation, startup, debug, and commissioning of new manufacturing facilities under
construction throughout Asia. Contract project, January 2005 – July 2005.
Control Systems Engineer, MSC Automation, Wilmington, NC. Sole responsibility for all
electrical/controls bidding, specification, design, and construction in a custom-machine
job-shop. Each machine was a unique, custom design, specifically intended as a “one –
off”, for manufacturers such as Cooper Bussman, Tyco Electronics, Stanadyne, MSE,
Purolator, Corning, and others. The health of the owner/chief engineer of the company
deteriorated, causing a lay-off. September 2003 – January 2005.
Control Systems Engineer, Lampe & Malphrus Lumber, Smithfield NC. Solely
responsible for all automation systems in a highly automated lumber mill. The 2 plants
presented a variety of serious control issues stemming from a lack of continuous support,
and, many partially finished systems. Working through these problems increased
production capacity by about 20%, and improved quality 10%. Project Lead for various
complex control system changes to existing production centers in the plants. Designed
and installed a wireless network in both plants and connected plants together. Created a
management data analysis system for all production centers, moving the company away
from a variety of unconnected batch systems to a SCADA environment. Upgraded HMI-
Rsview Windows 3.11 systems to RsView32/Windows 2000. Converted machines from
AB ladder to AB IEC 1131 compliant code. Troubleshooting lead. June 2002 –
September 2003.
Senior Controls Engineering Technician III for Corning, Inc., Wilmington NC. Machine
controls software creation/experimentation, development, startup, first and second level
trouble-shooting, improvement on a variety of high-speed, co-coordinated motion, multi-
axis sequential-operation fiber-optic-thread manufacturing machines. Project lead to
build a clean-room based high speed 5 axis fiber screening machine using Steeplechase
and integrated iFIX SCADA. Designed and developed a winder historical database
system to log all machine events for the engineering group. Project lead for redesigning
Winder hardware architecture with new HMI processor and upgrade Windows 3.11 to
W2k. Established VME backplane communications in place of NIC-based co-ax and
connected 22 high-speed winding machines to the plant network. Improved success rate
for snag and thread sequence by 30%. Modified code to improve spool-to-spool transfer
rate by 15%. Designed and developed data acquisition and trend charts (Wonderware) for
auto-flange adjustments, dancer feedback, tractor speed, spindle speed, and thread
sequence trigger points that exposed and pinpointed problem areas. Designed and
developed closed loop fiber tension control and tuned spindle rate control. Converted
AFA algorithms to PID method. Rewrote winder PLC & AML code for auto-wrap
sequence. Work included 3 large, major new plant start-ups. Wrote machine specification
descriptions, troubleshooting guides, and ISO 9000 documentation as part of project
management. Participated in many different team efforts to improve the plant operation.
