I am currently the Head of Research of Corston-Smith Asset Management Sdn Bhd, a
fund management company that is partially owned by British Telecom Pension
Scheme. Our investment spans across the ASEAN region.
My job function includes carrying out investment valuations on companies, as well as
analyzing the dynamics of the relevant industries across the region. Understanding
the factors driving each of the local economies also forms part of my job. I have
been working together with the Managing Director in formulating the investment
strategy and structuring portfolio. Since June 2008, which was prior to the Lehman
debacle, which subsequently caused a panic-driven recession across the globe, our
portfolio recorded a return in excess of 20%, derived mainly from fundamental long-
term investing. The key theme for our fund is corporate governance. Thus, my
current position also involves engaging with companies to improve their corporate
governance, at both the structural and strategic levels.
Prior to this, I have been working with Capital Dynamics Sdn Bhd (better known as i
Capital), an independent investment advisory company, since Dec 2003. My job
functions are similar, and that is assisting the fund manager to uncover deep-value
stocks. My analyses also serve as valuable inputs to Capital Dynamics Asset
Management, i Capital’s fund management arm, which is the country’s top
performing fund manager.
I cover a wide range of industries, which include oil & gas, pharmaceutical and
medical services, power generation, coal, education, automotive,
telecommunications, conglomerates, textile & apparels, and ship-building.
