PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Contract Engineer
Metzler Consulting LLC Springboro, Ohio (April 2002 – Present)
• Automation and control engineer for AK Steel’s hot mill providing continuous on-site
presence since April 2002. Expertise includes PLC’s, hydraulic and fluid controls, drive
control, instrumentation and measuring devices.
• Eliminated $125,000/month of operating costs by designing and installing new controls to
automatically detect production instability.
• Reduced production delays due to roll changes by 5% by optimizing PLC sequencing code
and preventing drive over-current conditions.
• Improved dimensional tolerances of final coil by modifying the automatic gauge control and
automatic flatness control for use with new X-Ray and laser gauges. Reduced flatness defect
standard deviation by 55%.
• Added special control features to improve quality for rolling stainless steel.
• Reduced lube oil losses by designing new PLC-based pump control, tank monitoring and
alarm system. Provided maintenance technicians with new HMI screens and alarms.
• Provided PLC training and technical leadership for electronic technicians.
• Identified need to reduce troubleshooting time for electrical technicians. Developed utilities in
Alpha computer to allow technicians to quickly identify PLC variables, I/O points, and code.
• Provided leadership to electrical supplier for the Control System and Computer Upgrade
Project and Integrated System Test at supplier’s factory.
Senior Application Engineer
GE Engineering Services Cincinnati, Ohio (Jan 2000 – April 2002)
• Resident GE engineer at AK Steel Co. Middletown. Prepared GE hot mill automation
specification and AK furnace bid specification.

• Developed system test procedures (Factory Acceptance Test Plans) and associated software
simulation for numerous rolling mill projects. (Typical system had over 5,000 I/O points.)
• Provided system engineering design, system test leadership, and installation support to steel
mill customers in US, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, South Africa, and Thailand.
• Trained customer staff at GE factory and end-user locations.
• Led hardware and software engineering teams resulting in on-time shipments.

• Project Management
• Siemens S7 PLC, GE-Fanuc PLCs, and GE DMC PLC
PC BASED APPLICATIONS
• MS Project, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, VISIO
• iBA Analyzer
PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES
• PLCs; Siemens S7, GE-Fanuc 9070, GE DMC, and GE Innovation Series.
• HMI - GE Fanuc Cimplicity
• Fortran 77
PUBLICATIONS and SPECIAL RECOGNITION
• Presented AIST. paper “Hot Strip Mill for An Feng” which described the GE electrical scope
of supply for new Taiwan rolling mill.
• Developed and installed the first GE Co. Automatic Flatness Control System for AK Steel Co.
Conducted design and installation at the client’s hot mill during full production with
significant improvements to material shape while incurring zero mill down-time.
