Re: Professional Skill Set Description
What follows is a detailed, comprehensive description of my current skill sets. Over the last two decades I have
become accomplished in many professional areas of the digital art industry, and I will make this listing as succinct
as possible, touching on the main aspects of my current skill sets.
I can operate:
• Onyx Digital Prepress Software – PC – Presets for single, multiple size runs.
• Hewlett Packard Designjet 5000 – Six color 62” roll, varied media – including heat transfer textile capabilities.
• Mimaki JV4-180 – six color 96” capacity – varied media, including heat transfer textile capabilities.
• In-depth understanding of green textile digital printing.
• Strathmore horizontal machine cutters; Mimaki heat transfer applications, canvas banner prep and production
(Including suspension instruments, grommets and pole pockets).
• Conventional prepress set up for web-fed and drum printers, from any and all vector based programs.
• Color separation set-up preparation for plates
Project Management:
I have many years experience working on graphics teams and leading graphic teams in large complex projects. I
have a full understanding of the commercial art creative process, with all its twists, turns, dead ends and
challenges. Keeping a project under budget is an essential part of this skill set. These projects include collating,
designing, producing and illustrating magazines and catalogues (In-Design, Quark ); A series of large format
convention displays for Stella Color in Seattle in which I was responsible for the digital illustration involved, design
composition, and pre-press set-up; Seven full size wall murals featuring digital illustration that I executed, graphic
design and composition of the finished murals, and included managing the team printing, producing and installing
the art; Producing multiple view 3D simulations of 2D floor plans; and redesigning entire product lines for Univera,
Inc in Lacey, WA, which included conceptualizing, labeling, packaging and promotional materials used in
campaigns in Canada and in the US (English and French).
Instructional Design:
For two years I had the good fortune to teach introduction to digital media to beginning design students at the Art
Institute of Seattle. The responsibilities included formulating lesson plans, tests and the class syllabus, but also
designing and implementing visual aids. The class approached both the MAC and PC platforms, and involved
basic computer infrastructure, maintenance, and operation. Introduction to desktop publishing software was also
implemented. Some of the visual aids I designed and implemented involved PowerPoint presentations regarding
basic workflow and archiving, and animated Flash presentations involving topics such as how a scanner works,
camera lenses and basic computer infrastructure,.
Project Liaison:
Over the years I have interfaced with many, many clients. In every respect, whether I was employed by a
particular company or was free lancing at the time, I have developed a flair for being an extremely comfortable
“buffer” or liaison between the client and the producers of the project. Having the benefit of working in the
commercial art field for two decades has allowed me to stay on top of current print/web production trends,
advances in technology and be able to explain how all that pertains to the client and their particular project. The
client comes to professionals like me because they have a graphic or multi-media need, but very often do not
have enough understanding of how to get it accomplished. I know this, and do not expect the client to know.
That’s why they come to me. I’m able to explain to the client in the clearest terms possible how their project will be
handled, what time frames this will require and the most accurate cost assessment I can give them. Because I
have been intimately involved in the actual production of these projects, I can then turn around and accurately
describe and define to the artists, technicians and end producers what they need to do to get the job done. I have
found this communication process both enjoyable and instructive, and it’s a rare opportunity that does not afford
me a learning experience I can use later
Graphic Design – PRINT:
My experience level in print design is expansive. I have designed, collated and produced magazines (Quark, In-
Design), technical manuals, large format print files for convention displays, billboards, labeling, packaging design
and marketing promotional materials. This would also include print advertisements for magazines, newspapers,
yellow page advertising and stand alone marketing brochures, flyers and pamphlets. I have also handled branding
AND re-branding campaigns for health products form Univera, Inc. in Lacey, WA. I am well versed in the creative
process, taking things from concept to finished product. Very often the client has a vague visual idea of what they
want, and rely on me to provide conceptual designs and thumbnails to clarify the concept and then move it swiftly
along the creative process path. One that is achieved, processing the concepts through to production and
delivery, which includes finished illustration, project collation, pre-flight and pre-press set-up, color corrections,
technical interface with printer and finishing details on project management
Graphic Design – WEB:
I can provide both static RGB imagery formatted properly for web site use, including composing, cleaning up and
re-formatting print images (CMYK) for use on a web site. I understand and can accomplish color correction, image
manipulation and composition. This includes product photography, people and places, or combinations of them.
Web site mock-ups, executed in Flash or Photoshop are a specialty, as I have many years experience with
understanding user interface. (I will approach Flash advertising design further as its own category.) I have a fairly
full understanding of Dreamweaver, MS Front page and standard HTML sites, and the requisite formatting skills to
provide imagery, backgrounds, advertisements, rich media and stand alone digital illustrations for use in web
sites.
Contemporary Illustration:
I currently carry a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art in Design (1992) in Fine Art, Major in Painting, and a
minor in Art History. I also have an ASC from Milwaukee Area Technical College in the Applied Science of
Commercial Art, Illustration. I am fluent in the quick execution of hand drawn imagery, ink drawing, oil or acrylic
rendering, and graphite or pastel rendering of products, people, some architectural sketching and can include
surreal or imaginary themes. Character conceptualization and evolvement is a specialty
Digital Illustration:
I have the ability to formulate digital illustrations using Adobe programs Photoshop and Illustrator, very often from
the crudest examples provided. Digitally cleaning up a product shot, re-inventing an image that has low resolution
(a web photo, for example) and prepare it for 300 dpi print use, or taking a clients ideas and creating them from a
blank page are some of the skill sets that I can provide. Digital photo retouching is a specialty, as I can take a
product or image and compose it to fit any idea or theme the client desires. Character conceptualization and
evolvement is a specialty, and can include animating the art in Flash. These illustrations are executed quickly and
professionally
Flash Animation:
I have the ability to author Flash web sites, advertisement, banners, roll over buttons, and stand alone Flash
movies in Flash 8.0. I have a basic understanding of ActionScript 2.0, and look forward to learning more about
the scripting possibilities allowed in building Flash interfaces. I am capable of combining Flash .swf files with
standard HTML/CSS web sites as well. I have also done finished character or object animation in stand alone
movies, web site banners, teaching aids and advertising on web sites. Character conceptualization and
evolvement is a specialty, and can include animating the art, usually in Flash. (I do have an in-depth
understanding of 3D animation as well, including kinematics, 3D modeling and image mapping.) A library of Flash
ads and banners can be provided at the time of an interview, or can be forwarded whole to you on a CD for
presentation to the client.
Multimedia Design:
I have developed an experienced understanding with digital video editing, and can take the project from the
concept room, to the filming site, to the editing and production room and beyond. Capturing, sequencing
management, and creative, intuitive multi-track video and audio editing are just a few of the skills I can offer.
Along with that, I bring the ability to digitally enhance imagery and visual effects through the creation of originally
composed artwork executed quickly and efficiently. This includes animated title effects, such s are found in the
master template suite in Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premier.
Please let me know if there is any other information that you would need, and I will provide it immediately.
Thanks again!
Sincerely
Paul Smith
