Testing and research of fuels, oils, coolants, paints, metal-working fluids, metals, and

polymers for the diesel engine industry.

Responsible for maintaining all instruments in the lab in good working order.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Creation of a new form of spectroscopic testing to determine oil contamination in diesel

fuel. This helped to detect oil leakages into engine fuel systems.

Creation of a gas chromatographic test method to measure fuel leaks into engine oil

systems. I created this to test production line engines to insure their quality before leaving

the plant which resulted in substantial cost avoidance in warranty claim reduction.

Development of an FTIR test method to measure oxidation levels in engine oil. This was

used to monitor the effects of increased engine oil temperature in response to changing

engine design requirements. This allowed the customer to understand the repercussions

and challenges which would result from the new designs.

Creation of an Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer test method to measure coolant

leaks into engine oil systems. I created this to test production line engines to insure their

quality before leaving the plant which resulted in substantial cost avoidance in warranty

claim reduction.

Developed polymer / fluid compatibility testing using Thermogravimetric Analysis. This

was very useful for customer decision making in selection of materials for engine

components.

Project Manager to achieve A2LA 17025 certification for the lab. This was accomplished

under my direction.

Created a quality control system for partner labs across the United States. This insured all

labs would use accurate and uniform test methods to provide quality oil testing to all

customers.

Creation of an HPLC test method to measure additive depletion in "Long-Life" engine

coolants. Warranty specifications and recommendations were based on analysis of this

test data.

Provided a solution for coolant tower chemical QC in a multi-additized system. Titration

methods work for a single additive inhibitor but combining inhibitors in a cooling tower

will give total readings not reflective of individual chemicals. I was able to devise a two

phase test consisting of both titration and spectroscopy to allow the plant to maintain the

system tracking actual levels of both compounds.
