SUMMARY

Accomplished Principal Engineer / Senior Project Engineer in the medical device, semiconductor,

automation, and aerospace industries for over 15 years. Led engineering teams to deliver a number of

successfully released innovative products, product features and automation processes. Creative and well

versed in various forms of technical analysis, having over 20 granted patents in many different fields

covering a number of released medical device, aerospace, and automation products.

NozTek LLC (Startup), Elyria, OH 2009 – Present

Manager/Owner

Started a manufacturing company with innovative products for the high speed automated packaging market

• Invented and filed a US patent application on a novel 90 degree nozzle assembly for molten

thermoplastic adhesives

Designed, analyzed, built, and successfully brought through verification tests two different product

lines of high temperature thermoplastic nozzle assemblies

Executing high volume pilot production of the product line at this time to verify product cost targets

and product performance from the high volume production process at customer beta sites

Generated initial business plan including the marketing & sales plan, competitor analysis, financial

plan, product development plan, intellectual property plan, and manufacturing/quality plan

Refining a new product design for field test in order to file a patent application by year end

ASYMTEK (Nordson Corp.), Carlsbad, CA 2006 – 2009

Principal Engineer

Led a team of up to 5 engineers to develop new semiconductor manufacturing technologies, products, and

automation processes.

• Invented the dot weight statistical control algorithm being used in the system control software on all

Asymtek semiconductor under-fill platforms (work cells). This algorithm was then adapted for flux

dispensing systems and is currently being used in the industry. The algorithm is a trade secret and

was not patented intentionally.

• Led a team in developing new isothermal dispenser designs that were the only performance

enhancements in the newly released DJ9500 (under-fill), and DJ2200 (flux) dispensers for

semiconductor packaging. (1 patent pending)

• Developed a new circuit board conformal coating method for higher product throughput, and better

coating edge definition. (1 patent pending)

• Led a team in developing a new ultra light weight high pressure fluid pump for mounting on the Z

head of a 3 axis robot. The pump was designed and used to handle caustic materials and pressurize

them safely up 1600 psig.

• Designed, organized and led many successful large scale Design Of Experiments (DOE) and process

variability tests.

ETHICON ENDO-SURGERY (JOHNSON & JOHNSON), Cincinnati, OH 2002 – 2006

Principal Engineer

Led a team of up to 4 engineers to develop, design, build and test implantable electric gastric banding

devices, and surgical instruments.

• Invented a disposable 5 mm articulating laparoscopic surgical dissector. Released as the Disposable

Goldfinger. (US20070185519)

• Lead technical engineer in developing electrically powered gastric banding bariatric implants.

Focused on developing an inductive (TET) implant power system, implant packaging compatible

with TET, implantable sensors, electromechanical actuators compatible with MRI imaging, and an

ultra-low frequency implant telemetry link. (US7191007 (pat.), US7481763, US7390294,

US7374565, US7351240, US7351198)

NORDSON CORPORATION, Westlake, OH 1994 - 2001

Senior Project Engineer

Led a team of up to 5 engineers in developing new high speed automated liquid coating technologies

• Led a team in inventing, and developing a piezoelectric high speed (>1kHz) valve technology for

dispensing a wide range of viscous materials. (US6157115)

• Led a team in inventing, and developing a high speed, low voltage solenoid valve technology for

dispensing filled coating materials. This technology was released as the MEG™ gun product line,

which saved the container division of Nordson (US5791531)

• Invented the electromagnetic portion of a new electric hot melt valve that became the E350™ series

of hot melt guns. (US5875922)

• Created and taught a well received corporate wide course on solenoid valve design

ETHICON ENDO-SURGERY (JOHNSON & JOHNSON), Cincinnati, OH 1992 – 1994

Technology Assessment Manager

Performed the technical evaluation of possible company and IP acquisitions for Ethicon. Worked within a

cross functional acquisition team. Generated and evaluated new medical device concepts.

• Successfully led the technical portion of the acquisition of the optical trocar patent that allowed

Ethicon to develop, and sell optical trocars (This has turned into a >$40 million/year product)

• Lead engineer in inventing and developing a new family of articulating 5 mm laparoscopic

instruments. (US5374277, US5330502)

• Invented and developed new electrosurgical methods and trocar devices (US5674184, US5540684,

US5445142)

PARKER HANNIFIN, Irvine, CA 1983 - 1992

Senior Project Engineer

Led a team of up to 8 engineers to develop new aerospace and automation technologies.

• Led a large engineering team in inventing and developing a multi-channel fiber-optic position

sensing system for use in flight controls. This system was successfully tested on a F18 aircraft at

NASA Dryden. (US5541405, US5693935)

• Invented and led a team in developing the Phototrak™ absolute encoding system released for

production by the Compumotor division. (US5258931, US5095632, US4954931, US4892416)

• Developed and taught a highly successful corporate wide course on developing, and programming

computer automated testing systems.
