Directed planning, scheduling, estimating, purchasing, finishing, quality control, invoice approval of 500+

map, and atlas titles. Trade, commercial, and marketing projects.
Prepress through finishing with 11 printers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Singapore and Italy.
Purchased a wide variety of paper from 3 paper merchants.
Expertise with presses: web, small and large sheet fed. Binding: case bound, perfect bound, saddle stitch, spiral, and
wire 0.
Also responsible for color correcting, stationery, and envelopes. Related purchasing areas include;
•
lamination, laminating film, poly bags, labels, plastic tubes, and vinyl caps.
Supervised staff of three, reported to VP Operations, worked with editorial, design, marketing and sales.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• Reduced trim size on height of laminated map from 10” to 9 ”, that allowed for two maps to print on one
sheet instead of one map per sheet. Cost savings 12% on brand line consisting of over 70 titles.
• Reduced trim on pocket maps from 44” x 33” to 42 ” x 31 ” to print two maps per sheet on faster and
more common 64” press equipment. Cost savings 20% on brand line consisting of over 20 titles.
Reconfiguring trims required cost analysis presented to management, used to
demonstrate savings and motivation to staff for redesign task. Assisted art and sales
staff in assessing how to make adjustments and maintain product quality and use
ability.
Resolved invoicing and quality disputes between vendors and Langenscheidt in a way that was fair and

firm, maintaining the goals of what was best for Langenscheidt short term and long term.
Coordinated a company wide Production Department reorganization. At one time there where three

Production Managers that managed brands, located in Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. The
managers were phased out and under my supervision coordinated merging of production of all titles in the
New York office.
Color correction expertise: Evaluated art and determined best and most cost effective way to improve
•
appearance while maintaining schedule. Also identified when to order more expensive high quality color
proof (contract proof) and when to order a laser proof (content proof) that allowed an editor or designer to
adequately check and approve for printing.
Evaluated paper based on sales and design considerations. Recommended text stock on the basis of
•
thickness (PPI – pages per inch) as well as brightness and opacity to compensate for low page count
resulting in thicker book with the feel of value. Recommended a less expensive text stock based on ability
to print four colors with greater opacity while going from 50# to 45#, further reducing cost. Recommended
text stock based on availability of quick turnaround pending orders for reprint, satisfactory replacement to
first choice of Chief of Sales.
