SPECIFIC PROGRAM/PROJECT EXAMPLES
. General Motors - Engineering Startup (2008-2009). General Motors
spent millions of dollars investigating and deploying engineering
systems for use throughout their global corporation. Several remote
sites were still using local, unique systems and processes. I managed
a 20-member team with members located in 5 countries. The team
visited each engineering center, found anomalies, corrected
engineering processes, and then trained the users. Global Executive
Directors in IT and Industrial Engineering received monthly report
outs.
. General Motors - Assembly Processing System (2008-2009). The
Industrial Engineers (IE) at General Motors are responsible for
ensuring workers complete their tasks in the most efficient manner.
This process varied at each site. In 1998, GM started a project to
create a common IE system for the assembly plants. The system had
been in development for 10 years but never successfully deployed. I
joined a 45-member team with members located in 9 countries. Through
active negotiations with one of the assembly plant managers and the
plant IE manager, I was able to persuade the customer to deploy the
system. The system was deployed and it was enthusiastically accepted
by the site management. I then established global buy-in to deploy
the new Industrial Engineering system within six months after it had
been lingering/stagnated for over ten years
. General Motors - Right-sizing / Right-shoring IT support (2005). Pre-
Production Operations (PPO) 25 EDS team members supporting their U.S.
operations. The price was locked in, but EDS was not able to justify
their team's size. Through a series of negotiations and due
diligence, the 25 member U.S. support team was replaced with a 22
member team from the US, Brazil and China. This saved GM $2M+
annually.
. General Motors - U.S. PPO Consolidation (2004-2005). Pre-Production
Operations (PPO) had three prototypes shops in southeast Michigan.
The move affected approximately 1000 people. The servers had to move;
the applications changed; the customer needed to training on new
systems; a building was gutted from floor to ceiling and then rebuilt.
This was a $75M, 2-year project. I directed an 18-person team. The
project generated $60M annual savings to GM and earned a GM Chairman's
Award for the team. In addition, I earned a Spontaneous Recognition
Award.
. General Motors - Excessive lost production (2003). A specific plant
had a history of losing vehicle production whenever there was a system
outage. I was assigned to lead the project to find the cause and
correct the problem. The team identified every critical device, the
systems and data needed for the device, the buffers, the reaction plan
and the recovery plan. The team then got buy-in from the plant
leadership. On March 21, 2003 the plant had a major system problem.
They successfully ran their Manual Operating Procedures. This
prevented lost vehicle production during system outage for first time
in six months.
. Chrysler - Stop Build Conditions in the plant (1989). Chrysler
printed a vehicle build order next to the operator which told the
operator which function to perform (i.e., what color to paint the car,
which type of radio to install, what color of seats were needed, etc.)
When the mainframe was unavailable, the vehicle build order did not
print and the operator did not know which operation to perform, so the
production line stopped. To lessen the impact of a mainframe outage,
the plant printed every possible vehicle build order the night before
and stored them in the data center. If there was a problem, the plant
sent "runners" to the data center to gather the print for their area
of the plant. This was a very chaotic process. I created an
emergency vehicle build system allowing assembly plants to build
vehicles if the mainframes were unavailable by using an existing
server. The system significantly reduced lost production, lost
revenue and excess plant personnel. The system was developed in four
months; it was used for 14 years. The system was featured in a four-
page write-up of an Annual Report of a Fortune 100 corporation (NCR).

spread across 22 plant and regional budgets. Responsible for data center
operations, plant floor operations, network operations, system
availability, disaster recovery/business continuity, budget, contract
negotiations, vendor negotiations, customer relationship management
(plant leadership).
. Coordinated all 09/11/01 IT issues for U.S. and Canadian plants with
hourly updates to CIO.

Responsible for every IT issue at plant - Warren Truck.
Plant Floor Communications Manager 1997-1998
Responsible for ensuring error-free plant floor communications at all 35
plants.
. Co-developer of a common protocol developed to ensure reliable
communications between plant floor devices and Chrysler systems to
enable faster response to problem resolution.
. Seamlessly ran plant floor communications for an assembly plant from a
development lab for one week due to catastrophic failure of
telecommunication equipment.
