OBJECTIVE

I am seeking a full-time chemistry related career that can make use of my

8+ years of industrial experience synthesizing and characterizing small

molecules for use in drug discovery. I am presently employed with Biogen

Idec here in San Diego, but my current position is being relocated to

Boston, Mass. at the end of this year.

SKILLS

. Over seven years of industrial experience involving the multi-step

synthesis and characterization of small, novel heterocyclic compounds

for use in early stage drug discovery.

. One year of small molecule preformulation experience performing

physical and chemical evaluation of early-to-late stage drug

development candidates.

. Proven success record of academic and professional experience working

on a variety of exploratory projects involving route development, hit-

to-lead identification, and scale-up projects from microscale to the

multi-gram level.

. Extensive experience with small molecule isolation and

characterization utilizing preparatory/analytical HPLC, 1 and 2-D NMR,

LCMS, IR, GCMS, microwave synthesis and numerous automated

chromatography instruments.

. Conducted experiments to evaluate the pharmaceutical properties of

drug development candidates using DSC, TGA, XRPD, microscopy, moisture

sorption, FTIR, RAMAN, HPLC (Empower software) and dissolution

analysis.

. Crystallization and solid state characterization for salt and

polymorph selection of clinical candidates.

. Extensive use of Beilstein, Scifinder and ChemGate database systems.

. NMR maintenance including weekly nitrogen fills and periodic helium

fills.

. Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of numerous instrument

systems including Waters Deltaprep HPLC's, CEM microwave synthesizers,

PAR hydrogenators, ect.

. Past experience working as a Highway Patrolman for the State of

Virginia

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Biogen-Idec Inc, San Diego, CA

Associate Scientist II - 10/2008 to present

. Conducted preformulation experiments to evaluate the solid state

pharmaceutical properties including solubility, stability,

crystallinity, hygroscopicity, ect. of small molecule drug development

candidates.

. Performed crystallization/characterization of freebase and salt forms

of small molecule drug candidates for the purpose of salt and

polymorph selection.

Biogen-Idec/Conforma Therapeutics Corporation, San Diego, CA

Associate Scientist II - 03/2004 to 10/2008

. Worked at the bench with small molecules as a synthetic organic

chemist.

. Generated new heterocyclic scaffolds targeting various kinase binding

sites which demonstrate anti-tumor activity.

. Designed and conducted experiments for small molecule route

development and lead optimization projects.

. Utilized knowledge of literature and patent searches to aid in target

identification and explore synthetic methodology design.

. Performed the stereospecific synthesis of a complex natural product

fragment as part of an on-going oncology research effort and published

its results.

. Generated libraries of compounds and provided sufficient

characterization data for inclusion in numerous patents.

Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc., San Diego, CA

Research Associate - 09/2001 to 01/ 2004

. Worked as a team member whose responsibility was the small-scale

synthesis and characterization of novel heterocyclic molecules serving

as 5HT2C agonists.

. Performed multi-gram synthesis of key compounds on the mole scale.

. Worked extensively with air-sensitive reagents, cross-coupling

organometallics and microwave chemistry while generating proprietary

seratonin agonists.

EDUCATION

The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa.

MS, Organic Chemistry - 05/2001.

. Worked as a teaching assistant in an undergraduate organic chemistry

instrumentation laboratory.

. 9-month synthetic chemistry practicum with ViroPharma Inc., Exton, Pa.

. Instructed three semesters of undergraduate organic chemistry

laboratory (Chem 35) students, 20 students per lab section.

. 5 Semesters of graduate research experience with Dr. P. Maslak where I

synthesized novel spiroconjugated charge transfer dyes possessing

interesting optical properties

. 1 Semester of natural product research in the lab of Steven Weinreb.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, AK
