Senior Development Manager - Engineered Performance Products Business

2000-2009

Appointed by management to bring new ideas and concepts to the product

offerings, while maintaining support of an existing customer base. Engaged

members of marketing and sales teams to implement a goal oriented process

of new product development. Interacted with research personnel

conceptualizing, testing and adopting new products.

o Initiated numerous cost reduction projects for a home care cleaning

system that retails at big box stores. Activities resulted in

significant business variable margin improvements along with an

increase in billings by 50%.

o Developed and tested numerous sailboat fabric products, including an

innovative base cloth that was universally accepted in the market.

o Invented and patented a durable coated fabric for luggage lining.

Coating is transparent, reducing shade change in the final end

product, enabling customer to reduce cut parts complexity.

o Introduced and implemented a significant raw material cost reduction

program in seven major business segments, resulting in variable cost

Advanced Development Manager - Abrasive Substrates and Engineered Products

1996-1999

Optimized product processes at company-wide locations for a $100M+ business

unit, along with continued customer-centric focus of current accounts.

o Managed the total reengineering of a casket lining product line,

resulting in a new fiber, and a new finishing process technology.

o Negotiated major raw materials cost reductions for an aging Impression

Products market, reaching new profit and margin goals, and extending

product life cycle by 4 years.

o Collaborated with manufacturing personnel in the reengineering of a

fabric dyeing process, implementing major changes that resulted in

reduced cycle time and improved product quality.

Development Manager - Specialty Products Business 1989-1996

Recruited by Greige Fine Goods Division as a product and project manager

for the newly formed non-apparel business unit. Worked directly with a New

York based marketing and sales staff in a collaborative effort to diversify

the new business.

o Conceived, designed and developed several iterations of lining

programs for a major luggage manufacturer. Support included process

flow studies of customer's facilities to aid in transition of these

new programs.

o Analyzed numerous markets utilizing QFD (Quality Function Deployment)

tools, applying studies to enter several new markets.

o Introduced several new products into a fabric-based metallization

program. Project responsibilities included on-site consultations with

customer for product adoption and production scale-up.

o Developed and successfully marketed an outdoor camping mattress fabric

constructed of recycled polyester fibers.

o Made significant strides in Customer Satisfaction Survey during

tenure, with a 10% average improvement rating in the areas of new

product development, technical support and response time.

o Consolidated component parts of work in process complexity while

maintaining full product line offering for the business unit.

Manufacturing Process Improvement Engineer - Peerless Plant 1987-

1988

Generated and executed product line improvements in areas of quality, cost

and delivery. Developed and utilized daily and weekly reports of

individual machine performance and quality by cause. Duties also included

budget and procurement responsibilities for a major machine component.

o Reduced dobby parts consumption by 75% through root cause analysis and

machine modifications to reduce oil temperature.

o Implemented an innovative solution to prevent catch-cord spindle

breakdowns, which was a major machine stop and downtime issue across

product lines plant-wide. Project resulted in a 1% stop level

reduction improvement.

o Worked directly with shift management and production associates in

developing and implementing a SPC program.

o Procured over $1.2 million of weaving machine air jet reed parts, and

was responsible for their maintenance, repair and testing.

o Chosen by plant management to head team that prepared plant

application for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.

o Recognized by Business Corporate management and promoted to

development Engineer for the upstart Specialty Products Business and

relocated to corporate center in Spartanburg.
