Career Objectives _________________________________________

- I am aiming to join the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector as

an entrepreneur, or in a senior management position in a pharmaceutical or

biotechnology company, to contribute to its effort to develop treatments

and cures for neurological disorders and injuries.

- I am aiming to bring to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector

the expertise, know-how and technologies that I have acquired and developed

in the field of adult neurogenesis and neural stem cells, to develop new

treatments and cures for neurological disorders and injuries.

Expertise _____________________________________________________

- Expert in adult neurogenesis and neural stem cell research with over 15

years of research experience and over 6 years of experience, as head of

laboratory and research management.

- Strong expertise in all aspects of scientific research, validated by a

successful track record of grants funding, scientific publications and

patents granted.

- Expertise spans from research vision and orientation, team building and

management, employees teaching and training, setting up and developing new

protocols, techniques and facilities, devising strategies to meet goals and

deadlines, writing scientific grant proposals, manuscripts and patent

applications, giving lecture & seminars

- Extensive and broad technical and practical expertise in molecular

biology, biochemistry, cell culture, histochemistry and surgery on small

animals. Ability to develop and troubleshoot new protocols and techniques.

- Fields of expertise: neurosciences, drug discovery & regenerative

medicine for the treatment of neurological diseases, disorders and

injuries.

Professional Profile______________________________________________

March 2009-Present: Entrepreneur

- File patent applications, prepare & compile a business plan

- Prospect & interview with capital venture firms, angel investors and

pharma/biotech companies

- I have identified potential secondary investors

April 2008-February 2009: Scientific Director & Professor

- Fighting Blindness Vision Research Institute & Dublin City University,

Dublin, Ireland

- Set up the statute of the institute, defined and set up research

programs, hired employees for first & second research teams

- Research involved a doubled-pronged approach for treating and curing

blindness. The strategy involves a dual approach between the retina, a non

neurogenic area, and the hippocampus, a neurogenic area. The research is

based on adult neural stem cells and projects that were developped in

Singapore

- Wrote grant applications, published several manuscripts, gave lectures &

seminars at various venues, edited 3 books

October 2008-March 2009: Editor in Chief-Research

- Journal of Neuroregeneration and Regeneration, Weston, MA, USA.

- Worked with the editor to launch the journal, contributed to the journal

revival, growth & endeavor. The journal is now in its third issue

- Completed the writing of several manuscripts, filed one patent

application, wrote 2 books & edited 4 others

September 2003-September 2008: Head of Laboratory & Associate Professor

- National Neuroscience Institute, National University of Singapore,

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Singapore

- Set up laboratory, hired & trained employees, initiated and completed own

research program in adult neurogenesis and neural stem cells, managed a

team of 4 employees, including students and research assistants

- Research involved developing new models to study adult neurogenesis

pharmacology, to derive primate cell lines & to generate genetically

modified transgenic mice. Particularly, we identified, characterized,

isolated and purified the synapses of newly generated neuronal cells of

adult rodent brains.

- Wrote several manuscripts and grant proposals that were successful

-including grant funding from the USA- for a budget of over 1 million USD,

gave lectures & seminars at various venues

- Set up a facility for cell analysis and cell sorting

- Performed teaching duties at universities

February 1994-August 2003: Post-Doctoral Fellow & Staff Scientist

- Laboratory of Genetics, Pr. F.H. Gage, Salk Institute for Biological

Studies, La Jolla, CA, USA

- Research involved the discovery and characterization of a neural stem

cell factor, its receptor & mechanism of action. The neural stem cell

factor stimulates the proliferation of neural stem cells in vitro, from

single cells, and adult neurogenesis in vivo. It is a result of this study

that we have been able to isolate and characterize neural progenitor and

stem cells from human biopsies and post-mortem tissues. These works have

been the subject of patent applications that are published & granted

- Wrote several manuscripts, and wrote and contributed to the writing of

several grant proposals, including NIH-RO1, that were successful, gave

lectures & seminars at various venues

September 1989-January1994: Pre-Doctoral Fellow

- Unit de Physiopathologie du Developpement, Dr. Y. Ben-Ari, Institut

National de la Sant et de la Recherche M dicale U29, Paris, France

- Research involved the development of a model to study and characterized

neurotransmitters and factors involved in epilepsy. I isolated and purified

the synapses of hippocampal granule cells, as synapstosomes, from adult rat

control and after neo-natal irradiation. As a result of this study, I

showed that an excitatory and an inhibitory neurotransmitter could be

released by the same synapse

- I passed my thesis with highest honor and felicitation of the jury

committee. I was the first student of that program to pass my thesis
