WORK EXPERIENCE AND HISTORY
Sept 1995 CRAY Research / Sun Microsystems / Oracle Sr. Mechanical Engineer
to San Diego, CA
Jan 2012
Responsible for the mechanical design of several Enterprise Class super computers for large
business applications. Set up a 2000 sq ft machine shop and acted as a machinist for sheet metal, MIG &
TIG welding, and machining of developmental prototypes. Involved with all phases of environmental
testing of products. Received 3 patents for development work in electro mechanical packaging design.
Mar 1993 SAIC Sr. Mechanical Engineer
to San Diego, CA
Aug 1995
Cognizant Engineer - Rack Systems Development, TAC-4 Program. Led a design team in a very
aggressive development schedule to provide ruggedized shipboard equipment rack systems to the Navy
based on HP RISC based computer systems and peripherals. Worked to cut development time in half by
expediting drawing release schedule and working closely with vendors to assure concurrent design during
fabrication. Reduced system cost through modular packaging and design for large scale assembly of
components.
Design Engineer - LATR Program. Responsible for the packaging design for an integrated GPS
receiver and navigation processor, as a piece of flight hardware for a Navy contract. Integrated this unit
with other electronics into a transit case for shipboard use also. Designs were sensitive to MIL-STD-810
environmental and MIL-STD-461 EMI/EMC requirements. Involved with vibration testing of finished
units, and performed thermal analysis and shock transmissibility calculations. Worked on a number of
business development proposals based on this equipment. Developed the initial plastic molded case and
packaging design for a ruggedized pen-type handheld computer, as well as several modular RF packages.
Worked as a member of a proposal writing team at SAIC Range Systems. Developed a design for
a lightweight backpack tranceiver with integral GPS to be integrated with the ARMY's MILES II military
engagement training system. Supported the design with thermal calculations and design to allow
operation in a hot desert environment with solar loading. Also worked on packaging for mobile
electronics shelters with combined HP work stations and audio and video recording, editing, and
presentation equipment.
Nov. 1979 JAYCOR Sr. Mechanical Engineer
to San Diego, R & D Machinist
Feb. 1993
For thirteen years my role was one of Principal Mechanical Engineer for JAYCOR, responsible
for the systems level mechanical design of twelve Underground Nuclear Test Programs, and a variety of
smaller above ground experiments. Responsible for the electro-mechanical packaging and thermal
mitigation design of several processor systems, vacuum system integration and design of large structural
weldments, optical and cryogenic design of several component evaluation experiments. JAYCOR
maintains a fairly extensive machine shop capability for in-house machining and TIG welding fabrication.
I was responsible for much of the capital acquisition for the shop, and can generally build what I design.
Over the years I hired and supervised a number of technicians, drafters, and designers, and occasionally
managed a field installation crew. Set up and maintained drafting standards for the company, versed in
Mil-Std-100, ANSI Y14.5 and Y32.1 practices.
