Significant Coursework

Clinical coursework at the graduate level:

> Exercise Prescription and Chronic Disease Management - This course

presents a comprehensive overview of the physical, physiological and

metabolic responses of the human body to exercise testing and training

in healthy individuals and in those with metabolic, cardiovascular

and/or pulmonary disease. Students gain an understanding of the

processes involved in prescribing safe and effective therapeutic

exercise in healthy individuals as well as patients with

cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary disease, and musculoskeletal

disorders.

> Clinical Exercise Practicum I and II - This course provides students

with practical experience in several clinical exercise settings.

Students will be observing and assisting established clinical

supervisors within the local medical community in the performance of

patient care and supportive services. Each practicum is worth 100

hours each and therefore each student will have completed 200 hours of

clinical work.

> Electrocardiographic Interpretation - This course provides an analysis

of electrocardiographic concepts of the normal and abnormal ECG.

Topics include rate, rhythm, hypertrophy, axis determination, atrial

and ventricular arrhythmias, conduction defects, myocardial ischemia,

and myocardial infarction. In addition, the use of ECG monitoring

during diagnostic exercise testing is discussed.

> Cardiopulmonary Pathophysiology and Rehabilitation - This course

details the functions of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems

emphasizing pathophysiology and treatment. Special reference will be

made to exercise as a mode of therapy.

> Concepts in Clinical Exercise Testing - This course takes an in depth

look at exercise testing in diseased populations. Topics include test

interpretation, metabolic equations, proper electrode placement,

spirometry testing, and proper exercise testing modalities for

diseased populations.

Work Experience

Two years of work experience at the Graduate Level:

> Two years (including GA work) working/managing in a Cardiac and

Pulmonary Rehabilitation setting.

> Responsibilities Included:

- Monitoring the telemetry system screen while patients worked out

- Prepping the patient with their telemetry unit before exercise

- Reading and interpreting medical records of each incoming

patient

- Writing exercise prescriptions for incoming patients, including

interpretation of the exercise test to determine the patient's

HRR (Heart Rate Reserve) and therefore the patient's target HR

zone

- Prepping the patient with their telemetry unit before exercise

- Running the weight training sessions with the patients

- Taking blood pressure measurements while patient is at rest and

exercising

- Measuring blood glucose of diabetic patients before and after

exercise

- Cleaning up the training records of patient's after their work

out

- Putting together folders for new, incoming patients

- Monitoring patients while they worked out (RPE, Angina levels,

etc.)

- Being aware of the patient's medications and how those

medications are affected when combined with exercise

- Managing the other students during the classes that I ran

Laboratory Experience

Responsibilities while working in the lab at the hospital while conducting

exercise tests with patients:

> Prepping the patients for a 12-Lead ECG

> Conducting and Managing Spirometry Tests with each patient

> Choosing protocols (exercise modes) depending on each patient's

medical history

> Measuring ventilatory gas exchange numbers while patient participates

in exercise testing

> Monitoring ECG for abnormalities

> Monitoring RPE and Angina levels in each patient

> Measuring BP during the test and at rest

> Interpreting the results from the test ( AT levels, ECG abnormalities,

RER levels, and VO2 max)

> BLS (Basic Life Support) Provider

> ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Provider

> ACSM's CES (Clinical Exercise Specialist) Certification

Summer Internship Experience

> Completed a 400 hour internship through the summer (mid-May through

mid-August of 2009) at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Alabama

> Responsibilities included:

- Working in Cardiac Rehab

- Helping with exercise testing with the patients

- Working with the in-patient rehab

- Observing in the catheterization lab

- Observing surgeries (CABG surgeries)

- Management of the patient's records (exercise prescriptions,

files, medical records, etc.)

- Working in the Wellness setting with clients

- Helping to create projects to enhance to opportunities for the

clients at the Wellness Center
