Chemical Engineer

Provided safety and health oversight to the US Army Chemical Weapons

Demilitarization Program. Evaluated safety and health management

systems by monitoring site program metrics to determine that plans,

procedures, best practices, and indicators reflect a comprehensive

safety management system. Conducted OSHA 1910 PSM related tasks for

compliance in the demilitarization sites.

Conducted process hazard analysis on chemical processes used in

destroying chemical warfare

agent such as munitions demilitarization machines to remove fuzes and

burster

wells and drain agent and energetic, incinerators and/or NaOH

neutralization equipment,

pollution abatements systems such as quench vessels, pH adjustment

columns, carbon injection

systems for mercury control, baghouses, NOx abatement systems, and

carbon and HEPA filters

for particulate matter control. Using Layers of Protection Analysis,

the events leading to the hazardous incident, recommendations to

prevent reoccurance of such

incidents, and thoroughness and completeness of corrective actions to

mitigate the hazard.

Fluor Corporation 2008 - 2009

Process Engineer II, Sugarland, TX

Checked the accuracy of the physical properties and relevant safety

relief documentation for the hydrogenation, silane distillation, metal

chloride reactors, and silane storage areas of the polysilicon 3.0 and

4.0 Moses Lake Expansion. Safety relief calculations, and "as built"

P.&I.D.s were reviewed to determine if any discrepancies were present on

safety relief specification sheets used for safety relief selection,

procurement, and process safety management.

Worked on front end engineering design of a fractionation system to

separate light oil from synthetic fuel from coal gas liquefaction.

Conducted feasibility studies, generating heat and material balances.

The goal was to replicate Sasol South Africa refinery baseline balances

to determine the appropriate thermo package in ASPEN Plus and the optimum

stabilizer and fractionation column sequence to achieve light oil

separation that matched existing operating parameters. Developed process

flow sheets and preliminary P. &I.D. Evaluated the Boiler Feed Water

System for expansion to accommodate additional fischer-tropsch reactor

heat recovery for steam production.

Advanced Environmental Technologies, LLC, Pensacola, FL

2007- 2008

Associate Engineer

Designed remedial processes to abate petroleum contaminants of

concern (COC) in contaminated soil and groundwater. Designed air

sparging/soil vapor extraction systems, multiphase extraction and

chemical oxidation processes, along with excavation source removal

projects. Designed pilot test plans to evaluate effectiveness of these

technologies under site specific geologic and hydro geologic conditions.

Conducted maintenance, optimization, and troubleshooting on commissioned

systems.

Developed a directional boring process to apply chemical and biological

reagents used in abating soil and groundwater petroleum COC. Sought

Florida FDEP regulator support for using directional boring techniques to

disperse bacteria to degrade COC. The process uses a boring rig to

disperse a consortium of petroleum degrading bacteria horizontally

through the plume, saving time and labor cost. Improved distribution of

the microbes in the plume is anticipated. The process will be used to

abate COC at the Graceville Mini Storage Site in Graceville, FL. In

addition, the process holds promise for chemical oxidant applications as

well.

State of Florida, Department of Environmental Protection, Pensacola, FL

2002- 2006

Project Manager

Performed project manager responsibilities for the Soil and

Groundwater Remediation Subsection, reviewing Remedial Action Plan and

Natural Attenuation Monitoring Reports to assure remedial compliance with

Florida Statues. Written correspondences was sent to the consultant or

corporation conducting remediation, providing the state's interpretation

of remedial data and what additional actions were necessary for progress

toward a Site Rehabilitation Completion Order based on Florida Statues.

Cold called upon large quantity waste generators offering technical

assistance to help reduce waste. The concept of "Value Creation" through

waste reduction was also marketed to show the potential return of

investment through energy and waste reducing projects.

Coordinated the 2003 Florida Pollution Prevention Conference held in

Orlando. The theme of the conference was "Practicing Pollution

Prevention in Our Everyday Lives." Twenty one sessions where held

covering topics such as the United Nations Perspective on Sustainable

Growth, Global Sprawling, Urban Renewal and Planning, Pollution

Prevention Goals, Alternative Energy Sources, and Project Green Shores to

name a few.

International Paper, Mobile, AL (mill closed in 2001)

2001

Pulp Plant Process Engineer

Defined and planned process improvement projects within the Pulp

Mill. Worked with existing heat and material balances, equipment layout

diagrams, P. & I.D., equipment specification sheets, and real time

process operating data to determine bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the

pulp process to scope out, plan, engineer, procure, oversee construction,

and start-up of improvement projects. Conducted maintenance,

optimization, and troubleshooting on commissioned systems.

Examples of the projects include modifying the instrument air

compressor/knock-out drum system to prevent water carryover, negatively

affecting instrument controls. Also, adding a pressure indicator

feedback loop on the debarking drum bearing lubrication system to detect

a pressure drop if a lubrication oil delivery line was cut, preventing

oil discharges on the ground, resulting in fires.

Tracked various QA/QC variables identified in the pulp process to ensure

quality pulp delivery to the paper machines, which produced white ream

paper.

Degussa Corporation, Mobile, AL

1997-2000

Technical Service Engineer, Various Clients throughout North America

Conducted peroxygen business development, process and project

engineering, procurement, construction management services for Degussa's

clients. Responded to Request for Proposals for chemical dosing systems

in various industries such as pulp and paper, cosmetics, textiles, waste

treatment, and aerospace. Start-up assistance and continuous process

support services, including troubleshooting and optimization were also

provided.

Recognized as the key team member for value creation when Clorox awarded

Degussa with an exclusive multi-million hydrogen peroxide supply contract

for production of Clorox end user products. The Clorox contract

represented the second largest account for the Peroxygen Business of

Degussa in 1998.

The Dow Chemical Company

1988 - 1997

Senior Purchasing Agent, Plaquemine, LA

Responsible for the procurement and contract management of Labor

Services totaling $110 million per year and the purchase of 30 million

per year in fabricated equipment, raw materials, and supplies for Dow's

Louisiana Division. Negotiated, administered, and maintained contracts

for the purchase of needed commodities. Represented Louisiana Operations

on global purchasing initiatives.

Pursued Value Added Procurement as a leader, working with Dow's

operations, engineering, and maintenance to standardize equipment

specifications, aggregate volume to leverage the best value and price for

purchased commodities with the goal of making Dow the low cost chemical

producer. Market basket studies were conducted on commodities to drive

cost competitiveness with suppliers in targeted areas. Business

Financial Analyses to benchmark Dow's internal business services with

outsourced opportunities that lead to optimized Dow work processes,

increased productivity and reduced costs.

Senior Process Engineer, Plaquemine, LA

Conducted process engineering tasks, simulating chemical processes using

ASPEN Plus to generate heat and material balances, design vessels, size

pumps and pipes, and develop piping and instrumentation diagrams for

various projects in the twenty plus chemical processing plants of

Louisiana Operations. Examples include replacing R-12 refrigerant with

chlorine as the refrigerant. This required replacement of coolant

compressors, heat exchangers and flash drums. Alice Chambers compressors

where specified with improvements to the stage seals.

Designed, engineered, and constructed a distillation system that polished

a once through, spent polyethylene carrier solvent, Isopar C, for reuse,

which was generated from two high density polyethylene production plants,

saving Dow $1 million per year.

Developed and coordinated a Plant Asset Utilization Engineering Plan for

Dow's Louisiana Operations General Manager, benchmarking product yields,

energy usage, and waste generation at each production facility to develop

a list of process engineering solutions. Yield increasing, energy

reduction and waste minimization projects were designed for each plant.

Savings gained from the effort contributed to the division's $75 MM per

year Asset Utilization Goal for 1996.

Technical Service Engineer, Freeport, TX

Performed process design services for Dow's Gas/Spec Technology

Group, generating heat and material balances, process flow sheets, P. &

I.D., and equipment sizing to abate carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide

from natural gas using blended amine solutions. Absorber/Stripper

process systems were simulated to meet client's gas specifications.

Process packages were developed for grass root systems, unit expansions

and retrofits. Projects were followed from process engineering to start

up, followed by optimization and any necessary troubleshooting.

Participated in a commercial scale demonstration of Dow's NOx abatement

technology which used chelated chemical solutions to scrub NOx and SOx

from boiler flue gas.
