FORMTEK METAL PROCESSING 182 Northwest Industrial Ct., Bridgeton, MO
63044 (2003-2008)
FMP is an $85 million group of leading manufacturers of capital equipment
in the coil processing, roll forming and metal forming industries. FMP
consists of Engel Industries, Lockformer, Lion Machinery (St Louis
facility), Iowa Precision Industries (Cedar Rapids IA) and Cooper-Weymouth
Peterson (Clinton, ME), which are all part of the Mestek family of
companies.
Director of Engineering (2004-2008) for the FMP group of companies,
accountable for Engineering, global new product development, custom
machinery design, engineering standardization, and design for CE compliance
for the European market for all FMP companies.
Select Accomplishments...
. Managed teams in diverse worldwide sites in China, North America and
Europe on new product development and product standardization.
. Created global engineering design and documentation standards to
insure compliance with European standards.
. Led team in the implementation of the ERP system across three sites.
. Managed the transfer of technology as older facilities were
consolidated to the St.Louis location. Coordinated with the FMP
facility in Beijing in the transfer of technology, production startup
and after sales service as manufacturing came on line in China.
. The consolidation of companies into one location provided the
opportunity to design the new facility with Lean Manufacturing and
process flow in mind.
o Operations moved from 40,000 square foot plant to 100,000 square
foot facility. The plant layout, designed with Lean principles,
allows the product and processes to flow without backtracking or
wasted motion.
o Assembly workcells designed with point of use inventory using
kanban control. These feeder cells provide subassemblies to the
final assembly area where the product is completed, tested and
quality checked.
o Established value stream mapping and cell design kaizen events.
Lead time reduced from 4 weeks to 5 days.
o Led office kaizen to improve the customer order process by developing
tools to automate and streamline the quotation of special machinery.
Lead time reduced from 2 weeks to same day.
. The merging of these companies and brands with long histories of
independent operation into a single organization provided a unique
opportunity to bring a new perspective and facilitate cooperation between
groups.
o The engineering groups of the respective brands each brought their own
design philosophy and preconceptions. By looking into these
organizations from the outside these once fierce rivals were molded into
members of the same team by recognizing and supporting innovative
thinking while redirecting the "not invented here" syndrome.
. Established New Product Development schedules and testing to insure
compliance with performance and cost goals.
o New Product Development managed through stage gate process.
o On time delivery increased to 95%.
