Over the last fifteen years I have been a Senior Technical/DBA Architect
with a diverse background in database technologies, architecture issues,
design, development and optimization of large scale database
infrastructures.. My functions have dealt with overall infrastructure for
various database architectures for OLTP, ODS and Data Warehouse databases.
The selection of architectural approaches encompassing hardware, OS, DBMS
configuration, database design and storage that support high levels of
availability, scalability and performance.
Experience Consulting
HCSC (Chicago) 09-2007 - Present - Senior Data/Database Architect
Hired to re-design HCSC Billing System for corporate administrative service
clients. This billing system handles 90% of HCSC Claims and Memberships
information. I am involved with the business, SME and BA's in reviewing the
requirements to come up with Logical data model and the Physical database
design supporting operational, warehousing and various reporting marts. My
role also considers the data partitioning for 4 years of billing
information and reviewing SQL causing performance issues. The simple
solution is rewriting an optimize query(outside of hibernate) but there
were cases where restructuring the data that caused performance issues
created by SOA architecture. My role also considers the service
architecture requirements supporting the data availability and timing of
data movement through these environments and interfaces. We removed the
concept of batch application interfaces to more message driven application
functions. One of objective was to provide more flexibility with the data
where groups and section numbers are no longer the driving force for
billing a client. The future growth of this system is to support one
billing system for HCSC.
USBank (Denver) 05/2004 - 09-2007 - Project Architect Lead
My assignment is to replace a Mortgage reporting system and convert it into
a robust online warehouse and DataMarts. USBank incorporated a new off the
shelf product (Gallagher) to handle our Mortgage operational requirements.
The issues supporting this reporting application dealt with - how to get
the data out of Gallagher in a timely manner, designing an interactive
reporting system to replace the 1100 batch reports and provide an ad-hoc
area for data mining. The target DMBS for the ODS and reporting Mart's is
SQL Server. I had to come up with a strategy for data movement, Logical and
Physical data models and playing the DBA role in development. The last
month I was there I was asked to develop a script to move the data from my
ODS tables into the old table design. The process was made up of stored
procedures and materialized views.
In 2006, I was asked to resolve a TIBCO related application that involved
real-time reporting issues for a Workflow system. In 2006, I was the
technical architect accountable for the technical design of a new work flow
system around FileNet's extended data requirements and Siebel. This project
involved SOA from an application and data layer. I was accountable for the
logical and physical data models and also played the DBA role for Oracle
and the reporting DB2 reporting mart. The reporting mart consisted of 2
fact tables, several dimensional tables for filtering and several UDB
incremental materialized views.
In 2004, I was hired to provide expertise relating to data warehousing and
technical Architecture. I had to ensure the applications are cost-efficient
and meeting the business requirements. These applications are used for work
flow processing (TIBCO and FileNet), DataMarts (data mining and reporting
functions). This Data Mart was 20+ TB is size consisting of all the banks
accounting data. The targeted database applications are UDB and Oracle. The
ETL tool of choice is DataStage. I had to meet the data availability
requirements that involved real-time updates, daily, weekly and monthly
feeds. I had to ensure the performance requirements for the user would be
met and the data/system availability will support 24/7 platforms. My role
was also responsible for the source to target mappings, DDL generation and
managing the DDL change control. I designed to database to support the
future UDB2 partition (attachments). The actual implementation used "Union
All Views" where we added and dropped tables. I introduced federated tables
to the bank instead of using unload/ load process.
Bank One (Chicago) 11/2003 - 04/2004 Technical Architect
I was hired to provide expertise relating to technical architecture and
AIX. My role includes capacity planning, understanding the interfaces for
data capturing and the overall technical design. The application related to
data warehouse for Risk Information. The constraints on the design dealt
with landing 32 Operational interfaces, removing obsolete applications and
standardizing technical requirements for a warehouse. I left this contract
during the merger of JC Morgan and Bank One, but I did provide a workable
solution to meet the RISK reporting requirements.
US Bank (Denver), 09/2001 - 08/2003 Senior Technical Architect
I was brought in to work on US Bank's CPS applications.
Dealing with the direction and design for their corporate credit card (E-
COMM business and Data Warehousing. I worked with the Business Analysts
and the data modelers to come up with a logical model and physical database
design. My function expanded to designing the processes, data flows, ETL
processes and data layers. Moving the warehouse from MVS to an AIX solution
where performance, parallelism and data availability are on the critical
path. This application is 24/7 where the reporting function is 10 terabytes
is size. The ETL tool has become a focal point to moving data from our
Operational (MVS) to our warehouse using (TIBCO, DataStage). I worked with
the ETL developers to understand the infrastructure and processes. I
provided many recommendations to improve on the performance. I introduced
the usage of Store Procedures and Triggers for the Java Web applications. I
worked with modelers to capture the metadata and store this information in
Erwin.
Aetna (Hartford), 4/2001 - 8/2001 Data Warehouse Lead
Provide technical and management leadership, restructuring the Data
Warehouse development and production environments. I delivered the data
sooner with incremental updates. I assisted in re-designing the front-end
(ETL- ABINITIO) processes. Recommended techniques to improve on certain
data subject areas that could not support the new requirements. I re-
designed the data flows and processes surrounding ABINITIO. Assisted the
ETL team in writing scripts to support inserts and updates to the base
tables. I assisted the DBA team in re-designing the tables with the usage
of triggers and summary tables, to improve the query performance and data
availability. I was instrumental in changing the corporate philosophy from
a monthly load refresh that takes 21-25 days to support incremental
updates. I recommended we needed the ABINITIO metadata tool to support the
ETL tool and
the slicing and dicing of the data required by the business.
Currently, this application is a 10 Terabytes. This application is
continually growing adding new data sources into its model. At this time I
had 57 people reporting to me. When I arrived at Aetna, I reorganized my
people to support the above application requirements.
VISA INTERNATIONAL, (Foster City) 12/1999 - 3/2001 SENIOR TECHNICAL
CONSULTANT
I provided technical leadership in the design and development of an
enterprise warehouse to support all members in their data and business
requirements. I transferred knowledge in the areas of databases,
transaction managers, data deployment and troubleshooting. I resolved
technical issues relating to the selection of an EAI tool for handling 320
million records per day with an annual growth rate of 25%. The design,
managed 7 days worth of detail information that contained 5 terabytes of
data. The ETL tool had to handle 10,000 transactions per second, that feed
our common data repository. This application is 24/7. I designed the
infrastructure surround the ETL tool and database updates. At VISA we used
Micro strategy and Cognos (power play). I spent a lot of time tuning the
reporting functions. I reported to a senior VP at Visa where I overlooked
several applications being developed in this new enterprise architecture. I
had a small staff (5) reporting to me to assist in this new architecture
for Visa.
I dealt with the physical design for supporting the business requirements
and the technical infrastructure relating to scalability and performance
expectations. I created the enterprise architecture to provide feeds to
down stream data warehouses and data marts. I ensured the data and system
availability, throughput, integrity met the end user's requirements.
Technology included AIX, UDB, Infomover, E*gate (EAI) and Kron scripts.
IBM, (Annapolis) 6/1999 - 12/1999 Senior Consultant
I was requested to review an application relating to performance issues.
The physical data design represented a logical model. The processing logic
(drill down) did not consider performance. Re-designed the data flows for
drill downs. I re-vamped the tables to consider fact and dimensional
tables. I introduced parallel processing for the batch environment.
Walked through all major processes and provided techniques to improve
performance. Reduced some of the batch processing from 24 hours to one
hour and interactive processes elapsed time was reduced to three seconds.
US Bank, (St. Paul) 8/1996 - 6/1999 Senior Consultant
I provided technical leadership for an $85 million project (five year
plan). Made management recommendations on various DBMS based subject areas
and decomposed business processes into more manageable functions. Certain
areas required the support of 500 transactions per second and others
required customer access through the web. The environment consisted of
AIX, DB2 UDB, Java, Focus and Akron scripts.
I created the physical data design, application layer and technical support
developing the remote customer access via a Web connection. This
application provided a bridge to existing operational and reporting data
and also allowed the Federal Government (client card) and business
(merchant and account information) access to required data. Recommended
that the data structures and processes were better suited with client/sever
technologies using UDB and stored procedures. Technology for this included
AIX/MVS, DB2 UDB, Java and MQ Series.
Responsible for physical design of the corporate data warehouse (20
terabytes of data). Proved and presented expectations with the new design
and gained approval for the redesign and implementation of the data
warehouse for supporting current and future requirements. All designs were
to be implemented using UDB and optimized for parallelism, minimum resource
consumption and performance (all units of work less than one second) with
all major tables to support collocated joins.
I was hired to review the performance problems of a major application that
was to be installed in November 1996. I re-designed processes and data
structures (short term) to meet their January 1997 business campaign for a
cost savings of $10 million and the prevention of layoffs. Recommended a
technical strategy to meet their future demands for these applications and
responsible for implementing this strategy with the limiting factors of
hardware and current performance expectations.
MCI (Cedar Rapids), 08/96 - 1995 Senior Database Administrator
Participated in the re-design of a major Billing System that required the
flexibility for supporting both client/server and mainframe platforms.
Provided the technical leadership and direction for all aspects of the
design and implementation. This application was implemented in all
subsidiaries worldwide, which required flexibility. Recommended and
supported the use of DB2/2 as the standard development tool.
Ministry of Finance(Toronto), 1994 - 1995 Senior Consultant
Supported and provided technical leadership for the mainframe (IMS, DB2)
and client/server (DB2, Oracle) environments. I trained employees for both
environments for more efficiency. I resolved all DBMS issues in the
operational and development environments. I participated in data warehouse
issues.
UNITEL (Toronto),1993 - 1994 Consultant
I supported applications using DB2 on the mainframe and SQLBase and Gupta
for client/server. I optimized the data structures, made recommendations
and installed new features to minimize planned downtime.
Worker's Compensation Board(Toronto), 1992 - 1993 Senior DBA
Helped modernize the operational environment and development area and
gained a strong working knowledge of the IBM Image Plus application.
Introduced techniques to eliminate the DBMS limitations (IMS/DB2) and moved
the support area from a crisis management to plan management. I reviewed
the design methodology and deliverables for new applications.
Provided recommendations and implemented procedures for operational issues
such as availability, performance and
capacity at the early stages the in the development life cycle.
Ministry of Revenue(Oshawa), 1991 - 1992 Senior Database Consultant
I performed all new development relating to DB2 and Chief Architect for all
new data structures. Responsibilities included automating the data design
process with the use of ADW and Bachman. Developed design analysis tools
not supported in ADW/Bachman. I trained technical personnel in the design
of databases for improved effectiveness and efficiency. Automated the
monitoring of production DB2 objects relating to performance and
availability. Productionized existing DB2 systems already in production.
Consulted on IMS activities and procedures.
CIBC(Toronto), 1988 - 1991 Senior Consultant
Consulted to all levels of the Systems Division in relation to the
effective exploitation of on-line systems software and application
layering. Participated in the development process for new on-line
applications ensuring the design met technical direction and performance
characteristics. I coached the database designers in optimizing and
delivering an efficient, logical and physical database design. Ensured the
design was both efficient and a good fit for the environment. I guided the
database designers on the activities and steps for completing a workable
design.
I provided guidance and direction for the on-line systems environment.
Participated in the preparation and development of the software plan and
addressed the issues in the plan. Participated in the capacity-planning
group for sizing the production environment and new workloads for the
coming year. I reviewed all major applications in terms of capacity,
performance, availability, integrity, and system integration. Informed
Senior Management on shortcomings of the design or environment and provided
alternatives for resolution. I provided on-call support for complicated
database and system recovery.

fit the environment. I provided technical leadership relating to IMS

As head of the database support group for the Toronto Division was oversaw
the IMS development activities, logical and physical database design and
developed and guidelines, procedures and standards. Interfaced with users
and development teams, negotiated and resolved any potential problems.
