Professional Experience
MOTOROLA INC. 1996 to 2010
Black Belt Consultant (2005 to 2010)
Motorola Agile Master Coach - Implemented Agile Development as a Six Sigma
process improvement project.
. Realized a 17% reduction in overall project costs, with a 50+% increase
in productivity and a 50+% decrease in defect insertion rate.
. Developed training material on multiple aspects of Agile Development and
provided training to software development teams across multiple Motorola
businesses.
. Implemented Agile Development metrics through Retrospective survey
technique to show process implementation effectiveness.
. Co-chaired Motorola internal symposium on Agile Development for multiple
years.
. Considered an expert within Motorola on Agile Development, training and
coaching over 30 teams implementing the methodology.
Championed Six Sigma Black Belt project - Third Party Vendor Management
Governance
. Saved over $428K using DMAIC Six Sigma process.
. Established documentation templates, detail process descriptions and
standard metrics for effective management of third party software vendors
. Results showed an 83% decrease in the number of defects reported on the
initial vendor product release
Mentored multiple Green Belt process improvement projects
. Certified Green Belt candidates using Six Sigma practices and
legitimately achieved required cost savings
. Projects resulted in over $189K in cost savings
Led the implementation of CMMI Process Areas in a large organization (over
500 engineers)
. Cost effectively implemented Organizational Innovation & Deployment and
Organizational Process Focus process areas.
. Achieved process implementation through analysis and piloting new
processes to ensure process effectiveness and buy-in.
. Required ROI calculations on large process changes and a "Quick-Win"
process for small changes.
. Participated in the organization's CMMI assessment in which the
organization achieved CMMI Level 3. Was interviewed multiple times during
assessments.
Resource Manager, Software Quality Assurance, Process Engineering and Test
(2000 to 2005)
Managed 8 engineers responsible for Software Quality Assurance (SQA),
Software Process Engineering (SPE) and Software Validation for a 100-
engineer organization
. Implemented CMM Key Process Areas. Initiated software metrics programs to
quantify quality aspects of software products and processes. Drove
automated metrics program to ensure "usability" of the metrics. 900-
engineer organization achieved CMM Level 5 one year after team assessed
as CMM Level 3. Assessed multiple organizations in formal CMM assessments
across Motorola.
. Prepared a 100-engineer organization for TL9000 and ISO 9000
certification audits. No findings were written up during audits conducted
for certification. Was personally interviewed multiple times during these
audits.
. Led 100-engineer team in implementing CMM Level 3. Team achieved CMM
Level 3 in less than one year after starting this initiative.
. Established "Buffer Management" as a software schedule status technique.
This technique determined the status of the project from buffer
consumption activities in the program. The process provided 50% earlier
insight into actual project status.
. Introduced Paired Testing to increase testing capacity of the team by
over 33%. Established test process documentation to ensure consistent
approach to testing activities.
. Served as a member of the Motorola Software Quality Council, establishing
software quality and process policies and goals for the corporation.
Quality Engineer, Software Quality and Process Engineering Team (1996 to
2000)
. Implemented Software Inspection process. Realized first year cost saving
of over $265K. Developed 8 hour training course on Inspections and
personally trained over 200 engineers. Results showed over 75%
containment of defects in development activities. Met division goal to
have 99% of all software products validated by inspections. Motorola
University adopted this training as part of their curriculum.
. Maintained software development procedures for Requirements Management,
Project Planning, Project Tracking, and Software Engineering in
accordance with SEI CMM.
. Assured established procedures were followed by developing and managing a
process audit program to reduce process discrepancies.
Titan Client/Server Technologies 1995
to 1996
Software Engineering Process /Configuration Management Lead
Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft System - Prior to 1995
Avionics Development Support Lead / Software Process Engineer
. Analyzed software development process and defect data to design software
quality metrics. Demonstrated expertise by publishing papers and
presenting to numerous professional organizations interested in software
quality metrics applications.
. Defined the Software Product Evaluation and Process Evaluation
methodology use by software development teams to review completeness and
correctness of software products and development processes.
