PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Engineering Manager/Manager, Machine Systems 1992 -
2009
Supervised technical work of a group of 12 engineers, designers and
technicians.
COPERION CORPORATION (formerly WERNER & PFLEIDERER), Ramsey, NJ
World's leading manufacturer ($70 million) of twin screw extruders used
globally for the continuous processing of plastics, chemicals, rubbers,
cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and foods.
Developed a new "green" product line capable of reducing the energy
consumption by 30%: Developed a new extruder barrel heater cover to save
energy and to increase operator safety. Conceptualized, designed and
fabricated the new heater cover. Tested and confirmed performance.
. Completed a $15 million project for EXXON, a major customer, to their
complete satisfaction: Led an engineering team which also had Project
Management responsibilities. The core technology for this project was in
Germany. All detail work including design drawings and specs was done in
the US. Heavy interface with Germany and the customer.
. Entered the hot melt adhesive continuous processing market to get a
turnkey systems project with 3M: As the Lead Engineer/Project Manager
led the system designs effort and sales support effort. Did conceptual
design, engineering, construction, installation, start up and
commissioning. Similar systems were later sold to other customers.
. Expanded the use of twin screw extruders to food companies. Developed
and sold a major project to HERSHEY'S which led to several other
projects: A 240 mm twin screw extruder was sold. Functioned as Lead
Engineer/Project Manager. Did the start up and commissioning.
. Entered the automobile paint business developing and selling to
VOLKSWAGEN a $12 million project: Did the vital technical sales support.
Named the Lead Engineer/Project Manager. Created US design drawings and
specs. Selected and managed US fabricators and suppliers. Interfaced
not only with Germany and the customer, but also upstream and downstream
suppliers.

COPERION CORPORATION (continued)
. Increased US market share and reduced costs due to the exchange rate by
completely building the machines in the US versus bringing prebuilt
machines from Germany and modifying them to meet US requirements:
Quickly hired and trained engineers and designers for the mechanical
group to get into full production in a relatively short time.
. A Japanese customer, NITTO DENKO, needed a split barrel lab size
extruder. Lacking the in-house design talent, outsourced this design and
build task. Contracted with a domestic supplier that had designed and
built similar machines in smaller sizes: The project was completed
within 3 months to the complete satisfaction of the customer and this
became a new product line.
. A UK customer, BAE SYSTEMS, needed a 70 mm twin screw extruder for
processing explosives - a design challenge. Formed a design team from
mechanical, electrical, controls and process engineering departments:
Designed, built and delivered the machine in 6 months. The project had a
profit margin of 30%, vs. the planned 25%, and the project was used for
marketing purposes.
. Resolved mounting customer complaints regarding the Autoguard couplings
used on Coperion extruders. Replaced with Brunel couplings at a 10%
lower cost: Studied field service reports, interviewed own field service
personnel and talked to end users. Selected with an alternate coupling
supplier, Brunel, based on performance, features and support. Tested the
coupling thoroughly on the lab machine and on a willing customer's
machine.
. Gained ISO 9000 certification in only 6 months assisting in the company's
marketing efforts: Hired Lloyd's of London as consultants. The project
was done utilizing existing staff. Formed a 2 member team, Engineering
Manager and a Senior Engineer. Lots of extra hours were put in.
. Added to the Machine business, a turnkey Systems business - not only
selling the equipment, but also complete engineering with upstream and
downstream, start up and commissioning: Started as an early member of
this team picking up the functions of a Lead Engineer/Project Manager.
Also assisted in Sales Support activities.
. Additionally, designed and built a lab size extruder for L'OREAL
cosmetics and prepared Engineering Studies and Proposals for MERCK and
ABBOTT LABS.
. Promoted from Engineer/ Project Manager
