PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
DirecTV Inc.
1999 - 2010
VP, Engineering Broadcast Software Systems
Defined the content distribution strategy for subscribers, including the
set top box, PC and mobile devices. As DirecTV business matured, led the
definition and implementation of a strategy for addressing content place
shifting (take it with you or watch when you want to watch), Internet video
event streaming (e.g. NFL), mobile content distribution and OTT (Over the
Top) content distribution (e.g. TV Everywhere). Strategic focus was to
"merge" the DirecTV linear video broadcast model with new initiatives to
create an integrated video strategy for current and future subscribers. The
challenge was to create a video platform that serves the DirecTV target
demographic of 35-50 while creating an attractive platform for younger
subscribers who may be less interested in traditional broadcast models.
Designed, developed and deployed all linear and non-linear broadcast
content distribution systems. Focused on strategic relationships with
Telco, Content Providers and Technology partners in order to define and
lead DirecTV implementation of a content distribution network that included
satellite, Internet and mobile delivery networks.
. Managed the development and implementation of all broadcast software
technology systems used to support the DirecTV linear broadcast including
all Content Management, Traffic, Guide and Conditional Access components.
Conditional Access strategy also includes securing content on the set top
boxes, PC/Mac and mobile devices. Implemented the broadcast software
systems used to support the DirecTV "pitch once publish anywhere" content
distribution model to deliver DOD (DirecTV On Demand) which makes content
available on all platforms (set top box, PC and mobile).
. Implemented the Internet streaming and content distribution strategy for
live streaming for DirecTV content offerings including NFL Sunday Ticket.
Responsible for the Internet content offerings for PC (Mac and Windows)
and mobile (iPhone, Android, RIM, WebOs/Palm and WinMo) including the
design and development of POP distribution network used to support all
Internet applications across the US. Rolled out streaming of NFL Sunday
Ticket for PC and mobile platforms.
. Defined the Content distribution strategy within the connected home.
Focus on movement of content from the set top box to PC and mobile
devices using the home network.
. Defined the client application strategy for DirecTV content applications
used to integrate and control DirecTV set top boxes from mobile devices
and PC/Mac platforms. Implemented DVR Scheduler application for managing
the subscribers DVR remotely for iPhone, Android, Palm WebOS, RIM and
WinMo.
. Implemented content authentication model to support TV Everywhere
initiative. Implemented authentication model with content partners (e.g.
Disney, Turner, CBS/Viacom, NBC, FOX, etc.) to insure uniformity across
content partners and DirecTV to support TV Everywhere.
. Implemented "Widgets" for DirecTV set top boxes. This content offering
provides subscribers with the capability to use Internet applications
directly on their set top boxes. System is analogous to Yahoo, Microsoft
or Google Widgets.
. Defined the DirecTV strategy for the design and development of all Ad
insertion systems for linear and addressable advertisements targeted to
individual subscribers. Focus was to distribute targeted real time
advertisements to DirecTV subscribers using broadcast for play back on
the set top box.
