Research and Relevant Experience
Extensive GIS Experience
I have taken five semesters of coursework spanning the undergraduate and
graduate level that are relevant to the conceptual and technical usage of
GIS.
. Introduction to GIS
. Business Geographics and Computer Science
o Gained experience with Java
o Determined site feasibility for a business in Buffalo, New York
as a function of population and distance factors
. Advanced Seminar on Spatial Modeling
Discussed conceptual frameworks for a variety of models used in
contemporary GIS research.
. Geographic Information Techniques in Urban Planning
Synthesized a suitability map for a potential greenway in the
Charlotte region.
o Assigned capability scores to existing layers using various
ArcToolbox commands such as Select by Attribute, Buffer
creation, Clip and Dissolve to create a super overlay layer of
all relevant factors
o Ranked pertinent factors and implemented a weighting method
using the Rank Order Centroid (ROC) technique to assign
suitability of land to the super overlay to create an Analytical
Unit layer
o Modeled potential greenway by converting the Analytical Unit to
raster and then through the usage of Spatial Analyst tools like
Cost Weighted and Shortest Path delineated the greenway
o Gained experience with Model Builder
Other Research
My primary research interests are in economic and political geography.
. Created an in-depth site feasibility report for a small business in
the Charlotte region based on current and forecasted economic trends,
as well as an assessment of the potential economic impact of the
business.
. In progress: Completed capstone research project on voter roll-off in
Charlotte; used GIS as a visual tool to display data on the
socioeconomic status of Charlotte voters.
