Michael William Carlson
Work Experience 2006-2010 Sonoco Products Company
Richmond, VA
Electrical Engineer
Gained broad project management experience through
projects ranging from equipment installation and
line modifications to increase production
efficiency. Coordinated with multiple departments
including Planning, Production, Quality,
Engineering, Training and Safety.
Managed and maintained scripting for quality
verification system for entire production facility.
Designed and implemented web application for
collecting and tracking quality and safety related
data. Provided necessary training and documentation
to end users.
Installed and verified numerous vision systems
throughout the plant utilizing Cognex/DVT systems.
Developed a 'systems validation' plan that allows
for thorough evaluation of production line systems
prior to department buy-off.
Coordinated various 'Lean' events incorporating 5S,
Poke Yoke, Training Within Industries (TWI), SMED,
Standard Work, and other lean concepts resulting in
production efficiency increases of 25%, and cost
reductions totaling over $100K.
Programmed production lines using Allen-Bradley &
Siemens PLC's, adding new features to aid
technicians in debugging line systems issues.
2005-2006 SeaLandAire Technologies
Jackson, MI
Simulation Engineer
Using Matlab/Simulink, coordinated simulation
efforts to represent station keeping buoy in an
ocean environment. Integrated buoy hydrodynamics,
environmental conditions and control algorithms to
develop a high fidelity simulation to predict
system's performance. Developed Lithium-Ion battery
model. Designed and performed numerous system
component tests.
2004 University of North
Carolina Chapel Hill, NC
Research- Biomedical Engineering Department UNC-CH
Worked with professors and students to build an
attachment for a premature baby bottle in order to
detect pressure changes seen when a baby drinks from
a bottle. Used SolidWorks to design attachment
pieces for base of bottle. Used LabView to acquire
EKG data and analyze the effect of sampling rates
while measuring heart periods.
2002-2003 Joslin Diabetes Center Boston, MA
Research Assistant
Ran Animal Physiology Core- did experiments using
CLAMS and DEXA machines to measure metabolic
activity and body fat content. Responsibly handled
physicians' and researchers' animals and
communicated findings.
2003-2004 North Carolina State University Raleigh,
Education NC
M.S. in Electrical Engineering
December 2004
3.83/4.00 GPA Eta Kappa Nu (Electrical
Engineering honors society)
Coursework: Mechatronics, Advanced Robotics,
Digital Control Systems, Modern Control Theory,
Computer Vision, Automated Systems Engineering, DSP,
Medical Instrumentation, Bioelectricity
Projects:
Designed and manufactured coin sorter and counter in
group of four. Used Allen Bradley PLC
Wrote program in C to detect edges in an image using
kernel operator. Also used many image processing
techniques.
Designed digital controller as part of a group of
three. Organized meetings and delegated
responsibilities.
Analysis and simulation of dynamics of an unmanned
vehicle with Simulink
Computer control of unmanned vehicle using PID
controllers.
Built a functional ECG amplifier and functional
pulse oximeter.
1998-2002 Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN
B.E. in Electrical Engineering and Biomedical
Engineering May 2002
Passed FE Exam in Electrical Engineering
Senior Design Project: As part of a team of two,
designed IV barcoding system for use in hospitals to
prevent medication delivery errors. Met frequently
with nurses and physicians to discuss feasibility of
ideas. Project was overseen by an employee from
Datex-Ohmeda.
