EDUCATION
Master of Science in Chemical Engineering (expected August 2010), GPA: 3.56
/ 4.0
Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, Missouri
Major: Chemical Engineering; Minor: Bioengineering
Thesis: Continuous Monitoring of Tissue Regrowth Using Optical Biosensors
Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (May 2008)
University of Pune, Pune, India
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
CENTER FOR BONE AND TISSUE REPAIR AND RESTORATION (CBTRR) AT MISSOURI
UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, Rolla, Missouri ? 2008-Present
Graduate Research Assistant: Conduct research based on the use of bioactive
glass to fabricate scaffolds for engineered bone regeneration in the
treatment of traumatic casualties and conditions such as bone cancer and
osteoporosis. Contribute to the development of biosensors that monitor:
conversion of bioactive glass to hydroxyapatite (the mineral component of
bone tissue), ease of nutrient transport through the scaffold, diffusion of
bioconversion byproducts from the wound site and overall health of the
growing cells.
. Collaborated in the design, fabrication, testing and calibration of
sensors that monitor pH and oxygen levels in and around the implanted
scaffolds
. Evaluate feedback from the sensors to help maintain the desired pH and
oxygen levels throughout the scaffolds, thereby aiding optimal cellular
ingrowth
. Quantify pH and oxygen levels at microscale colorimetrically, using a
charge coupled device camera, and correlate the results to optical images
of tissue regrowth
. Won first prize for poster presentation at the University's Council of
Graduate Students 2010 Annual Meeting for poster titled Continuous
Monitoring of Tissue Regrowth Using Optical Biosensors

NATIONAL CHEMICAL LABORATORY, CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION,
Pune, India ? January-May 2008
Interdisciplinary research center with a scientific staff of 200 and 300
graduate students focusing on polymer science, organic chemistry,
catalysis, materials chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemical sciences
and process development. Publishes roughly 450 papers in the chemical
sciences each year and produces the largest number of PhDs of any
institution in India. Files roughly 30 patents per year in India and 90
abroad.
Engineering Co-op: Tested the technical and economic feasibility of
separation methods for 2 complex mixtures: lactic acid from its
fermentation broth, and ortho(o)-chlorotoluene and para(p)-chlorotoluene
from their isomer mixture. Optimized the separation methods by considering
alternative unit operations and processes.
. Developed the process and designed equipment for testing both Adsorbtion
and Distillation
(for lactic acid and chlorotoluenes respectively)
. Evaluated simulation data to understand the production process, which
helped in estimating plant and product cost
. Designed and worked with P&IDs, Process Flow Diagrams and control
processes
. Interacted with industry representatives to determine their product
requirements
. Marketed the 3-stage distillation column design to a private company for
commercial production
Career Note: Served as Treasurer of the India Association at MISSOURI
UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, increasing the treasury balance from
$4K to $6K and growing membership from 310 to 450. Further details
available upon request.
