Research Directions
Research was focused on developing and evaluating the Human-Systems
Integration for the NASA Space Shuttle Block 1 Avionics upgrade. This task
entailed working with NASA astronauts to determine the functionality and
design of adaptable displays during each stage of flight. Additional duties
included using the MIDAS program to predict the effects of these proposed
design changes on workload and situational awareness. As a member of the
Army/NASA Rotorcraft Division, I also performed usability testing and
debugging of the Man-machine Integration Design and Analysis System
(MIDAS). Other research venues include human interaction with complex
systems, automation bias and, in conjunction with a Memorandum of Agreement
with the Israeli Ministry of Defense, studies to validate a computational
model of situational awareness. The situational awareness studies
encompassed a number of rotorcraft full and part-task mission simulations
conducted in the various simulators at NASA Ames Research Center.
