Objective
I want to work on cutting edge projects in the field of Computer Systems
(Software). In particular, I am highly interested in work that revolves
around system software (Operating System and
Compiler) for multicore architecture.

solving problems.
Designing, implementing and reviewing a proposed solution.
Project
File System for large NOR flash memory based storage device
The project was to design and develop a high performance, highly
parallel and scalable file system for a large NOR flash
memory based storage device (Spansion EcoRAM and Virident Green
Gateway). I have been working on this project in a group of three
since last two and half years. My contribution towards the project
includes (a) studying and analysing problems, (b) proposing and
implementing solutions and (c) unit testing and performance
measurement.
Project details
The proposed file system was designed keeping in mind following
properties of the storage device:-
i. The storage device is an array of NOR flash chips
(EcoRAM), coupled with a hardware controller (Green
Gateway). This brings features like parallel data transfer and
increased capacity (512Gbytes to 1Tbytes).
ii. Being a NOR flash based device, byte level access is
possible. Thus the device has very low read latency.
iii. Like any NOR flash memory writes suffer
from limitations like low bandwidth and erase-before-
write constraint.
iv. Life of device is limited by a maximum number of erases
per erase blocks. The erase blocks of the device can go bad
during run time (dynamic bad blocks).
The main features of the file system implemented so far are:-
i. Direct Memory Mapped Reads: File system is capable of
mapping the device directly to the address space of a process
for memory mapped reads.
ii. Parallel reads and writes: File system divides the device
into some logical units called Ranks. The files or directories
are then allocated space such that they span across these ranks.
And when an IO request comes from to the file system then they
are served in parallel using internal threads of the file
system.
iii. Logical to physical translation: File system maintains in-
memory data structures to do a logical to physical translation
of blocks of the device. The page-table style translation
table implementation insures low memory foot print and fast
lookup.
iv. Log based metadata: File system has logged based metadata
to ensure consistency in case of unclean shut down and to
improve performance of metadata updates.
v. Wear levelling: File system has a wear levelling module to
make sure that all erase blocks of the device are equally used
and have almost same erase count.
