Professional Experience:

IBC (Independence Blue Cross)

June 08 - Current

Informatics (Enterprise) Data Modeler

As part of IBC2010 initiative, IBC is building an Enterprise-wide Data

warehouse with a goal of delivering the right information to the right

people at the right time. Before the Informatics Division was created, data

from IBC's day-to-day operations was housed in multiple databases managed

by different IBC organizations using diverse, sometimes redundant,

technologies. Informatics' vision was to improve on the data and

information management at IBC by centralizing data into a single Active

Enterprise Data Warehouse (AEDW). AEDW implements HIPAA related regulatory

requirements for PHI (Protected Health Information); PII (Personally

Identifiable Information) like Member, Person related specifics; Secure

Business content like specific Pharmacy Amounts, units etc. PHI is

individually identifiable health information related to Health care, Health

Condition, Payment for care and Identity etc. Organization currently using

HIPAA 4010A1 transaction set for Healthcare transactions ( like Medical

Claims-Professional (837P) etc.) and company is getting ready for Jan1,

2012 mandated compliance with 5010, which includes 700+ modifications,

primarily technical changes (adds, changes, deletes). Initiative includes

Internal Gap Analysis, major Core System Release in 2010 and Trading

Partner Testing in early 2011etc.

Today, the AEDW is a dynamic and complex system that provides a single

source for accurate and up-to-date company data. Currently, the AEDW

consolidates information across all lines of business and integrates data

from more than 35 source systems. The AEDW has replaced older repositories

and as a result has realized administrative cost savings each year through

reduced license and data storage charges.

Much of the data in AEDW is updated more frequently than was previously

available, with many daily updates including medical claims, pharmacy

claims, enrollment, authorizations, and lab results. The resulting

efficiencies are tremendous. For example, Informatics processes more types

of data in six hours every night than were previously processed monthly

over the course of nine business days for one of our older data warehouses.

In addition to the centralization, the AEDW provides consistent definitions

of data fields as well as allows specialized data views by stakeholder.

Hundreds of IBC associates access the AEDW more than 8,500 times each month

to generate reports on a myriad of topics including member risk,

profitability, and medical costs.

The AEDW includes:

Data from 31 subject areas such as: Customer, Product, Group, Member and

Enrollment; and Provider

One billion unique records

More than four terabytes (four trillion KB) of raw and summarized data

250,000 claims records loaded daily

Data Modeling Activities: The Data Modeler is responsible for developing

data models and working closely with all development resources in regards

to creating an integrated model comprising multiple business/subject areas

of the data warehouse. Responsible for maintaining and distributing

Logical, Physical ERWIN data models for Medical Claims Subject Area and

Financial/Actuarial Profitability Subject Area(Capitation Pay, Premium Bill

Amount, Customer Facing Financial amounts for Medical, Pharmacy Claims,

CTHP Amounts, Disease Management, Wellness, QIPS, Broker Commission Amounts

etc.)

Overall responsibilities include extracting business rules (business

processes, business entities, etc.) from the customer, Analyzing data from

Source System, Data extracts/sample, Current warehouse using complex SQL

and designing the associated model, and create all required documentation

to support, communicate, and validate the data model. The Data Modeler

will leverage the current software utilized by the Informatics division.

All models created should conform to the strategic goals of the

Informatics division and should have appropriate supporting documentation

(entity relationship diagrams (ERDs), business process diagrams, and

process flow diagrams, metadata, etc.).

SQL Queries: 1) In AEDW, 'Capitation Pay' table contains cap data like

Capitation Amount, surcharge contains data by member, by PCP provider, by

product/package coverage by fund type. Supported business data needs, by

running various complex SQLs using UNION, multiple INNER JOINs and some

Left Outer Joins (where appropriate),derived date calcs in the SELECT,

filters, GROUP BYs and HAVING as needed.

2) Cap_Pay table is joined to Grp_Mbr table which is joined to Grp table

and also joined to Grp_Mbr_Enrol_Sum table, Grp_Prod_Pkg_Cvg table.
