Client: External audit of a manufacturer of emergency and rescue vehicles
Objective: Performed shadow investigation of internal auditor procedures
in the investigation of unsupported and fraudulent journal entries
perpetrated by a corporate controller at a manufacturer of emergency and
rescue vehicles.
Key Results: Determined through forensic interview summaries, sample
testing of journal entries, and review of current process and procedures
that fraudulent journal entries and improper inventory counts were created
due to improper tone-from-the top directives from specific senior executive-
level individuals.
Client: Global chemical manufacturer
Objective: Investigated allegations of unsupported journal entries and
improper tone-at-the top as identified by this global chemical
manufacturer's auditors.
Key Results: Determined through a review of over 700,000 emails, detailed
background investigations of key accounting and finance employees, and a
review of sampled journal entries that there were no indications of
fraudulently made journal entries however there were tone at the top issues
and insufficient accounting expertise in the accounting department.
Data Analytics - 1 Selected Project:
Client: Fortune 500 retail chain
Objective: Review results of data analytics for indications of fraudulent
transactions on the company's vendor master file, employee master file,
payroll data, accounts payable data, and accounts receivable data.
Prioritize findings and help mitigate the risk of future fraudulent
transactions by working with the client and their process holders to
determine new processes and procedures.
Key Results: Through a review of potential fraudulent transactions
identified conflict of interest issues, ghost employees, and over payment
for services. Through a review of policy and procedures identified further
cost savings by combining processes, consolidating vendor services on
company level and not department level, and identifying vendor processes
that should have gone up for bidding but were not, we also identified
various areas where stricter controls were needed.
Ligation and Dispute Consulting - 1 Selected Project:
Client: Fortune 500 automotive manufacture
Objective: Calculate potential damages associated to an alleged breach of
contract by a race team sponsored by the client. Write an expert report
that details the damage calculation methodology. Prepare an expert to
testify on the damage calculation methodology and calculated amount.
Key Results: Through a review of the contract, depositions, accounting
activity, interviews with client and race team personnel, and other
documentation; we determined a calculation methodology that captured all of
the costs forgone by the race team due to their affiliation with the
client, as well as, determined the amount of sponsorship fees that were to
be refunded due to the alleged breach of contract. The court awarded the
client $16 million, which was the total amount calculated in the expert
report.
