MSc project: ''The study into the role of Zn compounds in the
inhibition of inflammation". The project was carried out at The
Rowett Research Institute of Nutrition and Health under the

The potential therapeutic
effect of a novel Zn macrocyclic complex was investigated on
colon fibroblasts CCD-18Co and RAW 264.7 macrophages after
stimulation with menadione to induce reactive species
production.

Cytometric analysis (FACS) and Enzyme-linked immunosorbent
assay (ELISA).

Detection of the housekeeping gene Actin by protein analysis
studies.
The aim of this study was to suggest and design an assay that
was suitable to assess Actin at protein level in cancer cells.
Total protein was extracted from cells and Actin expression
detected by Western blot analysis.

Polyamines analogues have been demonstrated to exhibit anti-
tumour activity in a large number of tumours. The study aimed
to test the toxicity of bisnaphthalimidopropyl polyamine
derivative compounds (BNIPDadec and BNIPDaoct) in a breast
cancer cell line (MDA MB 231) to assess which one was most
active in reducing the progression of cancer cells.
In addition the expression of genes involved in polyamine
anabolism and catabolism was assessed by RT-PCR in MDA MB 231
cells treated with BNIPDadec and BNIPDaoct.
Techniques undertaken: Cell Culture; Aseptique tecquiniques;
MTT assay; RNA extraction; RT- PCR; Agarose Gel
Electrophoresis.
