EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
2009 - Developer, IBM (Information Technology)
Created and tested a prototype MicroStrategy environment drawing data
from a DB2 datawarehouse. An existing MicroStrategy reporting system
was drawing data from several separate Oracle datamarts. The prototype
served as a feasibility test for migrating the Oracle data into a DB2
datawarehouse.
1998-2009 - Information Consultant, EDS (Information Technology)
Contributed technical knowledge and expertise to a business
intelligence group. Participated in a variety of projects and
initiatives in support of a large umbrella contract between EDS and
General Motors. Areas of application included:
. Property management.
o Served as Microstrategy architect, lead report developer
and system administrator. Also performed business
analysis, data modeling and ETL.
. Plant performance management.
o Served as Essbase data modeler and system administrator.
. Customer incentive analysis.
o Developed reports using Cognos and Oracle PL/SQL.
. Contract administration.
o Served as Essbase architect. Supervised one Essbase
developer, one SQL programmer, and two VBA programmers.
. Design process improvement.
o Gathered customer requirements and created reports using
Cognos and Oracle.
o Served as Cognos system administrator. Performed
installation, and configuration of a new deployment of
Cognos software.
1997-1998 - Quality Engineer, TRW Automotive Electronics (Manufacturing)
Managed quality and resolved quality issues for two automated
production lines. Negotiated between company executives and customer
representatives to agree on requirements for a vendor performance
dashboard. Modeled work flows for a conversion to SAP planning
software. Designed and created a new process and a new database (MS
Access) that led to significant inventory reductions.
1996-1997 - Quality Engineer, Tower Automotive (Manufacturing)
Managed quality during the planning, installation, and initial production
phases of a computer-controlled metal fabrication plant. Planned and
supervised acceptance testing for computerized work cells. Wrote SQL
queries for quality studies.
1987-1995 - Statistician/Quality Engineer, Autoliv (R&D, Manufacturing)
Represented Quality Assurance on product development teams. Designed and
ordered custom gages. Provided statistical consulting to research and
development projects and process improvement initiatives. Taught
statistical methods to engineers. Presented daily quality reports to the
management team.
EDUCATION
. Master of Science-Statistics-Brigham Young University, 1990
. Bachelor of Arts-International Relations-Brigham Young University,
1984
. Additional training, including: Lean Six Sigma; XML and HTML; Object-
oriented Programming (Java); Business Objects software; SAS software.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
. Created a large MicroStrategy reporting system containing 120 new web
reports, plus capability for ad-hoc user-created reports. Created a
new method for documenting user requirements and assigned them out to
a group of report developers, including myself. Created a system for
customers to more easily manage user security.
. Installed, configured, and documented a high-availability Cognos 8
application with failover and load balancing. Developed a set of
Cognos reports with cascading prompts and drill-through links.
Negotiated with multiple groups of users to resolve conflicts and
agree on optimal report requirements.
. Installed and maintained Essbase servers on Windows platforms and
maintained an Essbase server on a Unix platform. Created Essbase cubes
and used ESSCMD scripts, load rules, and calc scripts to automate cube
maintenance. Tuned the cubes and scripts for a ten-fold performance
gain. Communicated multi-dimensional analysis concepts to users and
management.
. Convinced two vice-presidents to merge two projects into one, greatly
reducing development cost. Managed a team of peers and outside
consultants to implement the project-a part tracking system that
reduced search times from days to minutes.
. Created an automated method of analyzing x-ray images, and convinced a
customer to apply it to a supplier problem. This method, together with
the part tracking system listed above, solved the problem and
prevented a 20-million-dollar recall that would have jeopardized
future business between the supplier and the customer. Instead, the
supplier won a quality award from the customer, becoming the first
American supplier to win it.
. Created a very compact serial number format, including a three-
character date, that allowed a massive increase in production volumes
without costly software rewrites.
. Created a method for making automatic additions to the structure of a
multi-dimensional database, leading to reduced maintenance cost and
increased reliability. The method captures and classifies error
messages generated by an automated data load process. Then it
translates text from selected error messages into script commands that
automatically update the database structure.
