1. A number of differences were discovered when comparing our experimental

measurments

with the norm. Several of these consists of the following:

In our experiment the subjects joint flexibility differed from the norm in every category. This

can be attributed to the prevalance of soft or rigid tissue surrounding the joint. The

aformentioned tissue may be present in particular joints of the body but not neccessary all

which results in a limitation of movement.For instance our subject measured 100 degrees

with respect to his knee joint, in comparison to the norm he has a reduced range of joint

motion as opposed to the norm which stands at 150 degrees. A secondary element

explaining a disparity between the norm and my subject is the shape of the articular

surfaces of the bones. The majority of the main joint areas measured in our subject

indicated less flexibility versus the norm. I infer my subjects articular cartilage is weaker

then the norm The articular cartilage cushions and protects the bones and my subjects

possibly is suffering from diminished articular cartilage. It's also a possibility that my

subjects ligaments are restraining the movement of the joints - this can occur when a

persons ligaments are shorter than the average persons; since the ligaments are located

around the joint this can have a direct effect on the range of motion of a joint. An injury to

the ligament can greatly influence the movement of a joint due to the stability role of the

ligament which supports the joint. Another key factor which can be applicable in my

subjects case is excercise. It has been proven that the outcome of excersising a muscle

can have a large effect on a persons flexibility. In our case I can deduce our subject may

not participate in strenght training excercises as frequently as the average person thus

decreasing his flexibility. The lack of excercise consequently can cause a joint and muscle

to deterioriate. Finally numerous other differences can be linked to the differential in

measurements; the apposition of bulky tissue which restrics joint flexibility due to thich

muscle or excessive fat, gender of the subject (s ) body build, heredity, occupation and

age.

2. Factors effecting the R.O.M are multiple. They are comprised of soft or rigid tissue

surrounding the joint presenting a barrier to full flexibility. This is caused by either a lack of

strenght in the muscle tissues or conversely an excessive amount of strenght within the

tissues consequently impeding flexibility. Additionaly, as mentioned above the shape of

the articular surfaces of the bones can have a effect on R.O.M due to a degeneration of

the cartilage cushioning the bone - when this occurs arthritis is imminent or existent.

Restraining effects of ligaments is another factor effecting R.O.M. In the event an

individual has shorter ligaments or an injury to the ligament itself, a persons flexibility is

decreased; this is because the ligaments are situated near the joints. Excersise or lack of

excercise can impact range of motion in that avid excercisers enjoy more flexibility

whereas people who fail to excercise regularly suffer from muscle and joint degeneration.

Excercise results in increased blood flow to the muscle and joints. The apposition of bulky

tissues such as muscle and fat can also bear upon R.O.M. Bulky muscles limit flexion as

does excessive fatty tissue. Age can affect the range of motion due to changes in

connective tissues; these changes include : loss of suppleness due to the replacement of

muscle fibers with fatty collageneous fibers, a change of the chemical structure of the

tissues as we age. The remaining factors are gender, occupation, injury, heredity, state of

physical fitness and body build

3 An external force pushing on the body around the joint. For example, a physical

therapist who is attempting to aid a patient, an opponent or a piece of equipment such as

the continous passive motion machine which provides prescribed, slow and gentle passive

range of motion. Frequent use of this machine greatly reduces pain and discomfort within

the joints. The physical therapist utilizing passive ROM enables the patient to achieve

overall mobility post injury or surgery.

4. For the most part the goniometer supplies accurate measurment readings in the event

the anatomical landmark being measured is specifically defined coupled with the examiner

locating the joint correctly. However, in certain instances such as when the bony

landmarks are not well defined stemming from excess soft tissue coverage or other

causes. Alternatively, if the goniometer axis is not properly positioned over the joint axis -

this may result in an inaccurate reading. To heighten the accuracy all joints being

measured should be stabilized. Innovative methods like digital measuring has been used

recently
