enterprise technology, and R&D to Federal and Defense agencies.

Database Administrator & Conversion Task Leader (1994-2009)

Managed large integrated DODIIS Sybase database hosted on Sun Solaris

servers for the Defense Intelligence Agency. Optimized Sybase indexes to

balance performance between queries and updates. Assisted other team

members in writing T-SQL queries to take advantage of Sybase optimizations

with the judicious use of joins and sub-queries where appropriate.

Participated in database re-design while porting system from Model 204

database on IBM Mainframe to Unix Client/Server environment. Converted

database schema to third normal form to enhance performance and facilitate

future expansion and enhancements. Developed custom Perl/Sybase software to

extract, transform, and load data from more than 150 tables into the new

database schema.

Developed hybrid Perl/Java routines to perform complex geo-spatial

computations required to convert geographic coordinates to Universal

Transverse Mercator (UTM) and Military Grid coordinates. Utilized XML to

provide a common format for exchanging system data with external sources.

Developed Perl software to extract, transform, and load selected data to MS

Access database for analysis with COTS products. Developed Perl software to

extract, transform, and load selected data to remote Unix directories

automatically, using embedded FTP.

Assisted with regression testing during delivery and installation of system

upgrades. Worked with Configuration Management team to streamline CM

operations to better integrate test results into the CM process. Teamed

with Unix System Administrators to analyze and correct system performance

bottlenecks. Shared responsibility for monitoring Sybase Application

Servers to stop/start them as required to investigate problems or to

perform routine system maintenance. Developed numerous Sybase and Unix

tools and utilities to aid System Administrators and Database

Administrators in their day-to-day activities. Portfolio of Sybase and Unix

utilities available for review.

Employed Perl programming language with Sybase interface to perform large-

scale database maintenance activities, making full use of Perl's data

manipulation features and programming constructs. Massive database cleanups

and data recovery were accomplished quickly and safely with a fraction of

the resources needed otherwise. The combination of T-SQL's query strengths

and Perl's data manipulation strengths created an agile, flexible, and

secure platform for ongoing database maintenance.

Sybase/Perl interface also used to scan Sybase error logs for problem

identification and resolution. Processing bottlenecks were identified and

database parameters adjusted accordingly. Inefficient T-SQL identified and

re-factored to gain optimal performance. Peak load statistics gathered and

evaluated to aid in database performance tuning.

One of the most successful and useful examples of the Sybase/Perl interface

was software developed to perform data recovery for logical records

accidentally deleted by the user. The logical records are comprised of

dozens, hundreds, and sometimes thousands of physical records which are

logically connected. This activity was previously done manually and it

required more than an hour to reconstruct a single logical record and

restore it to the database. Data recovery is now accomplished in minutes

without the errors inherent with manual intervention.

Development Task Leader (1993-1994)

Orchestrated development of DODIIS imagery and messaging software for the

Defense Intelligence Agency's AIRES Lifecycle Extension (ALE) project using

C++. Supervised a team of 3 technical resources.

. Saved time and motion during development cycles by training developers in

the use of C++ macros to eliminate duplicate code.

. Enabled developers to focus 2 more hours per day on development tasks by

implementing automated regression testing software.

. Reduced integration test failure 60% by altering development lifecycle to

test module interfaces before developing module content.
