OVERVIEW: Professional IT manager with 20 years hands-on experience. 12 years of Cognos BI and Data

Mart/Warehouse end to end experience.

EXPERIENCE:

8/02 - Present Arch Insurance Group

Assistant Vice President – Enterprise Reporting

Business Intelligence/Data Marts

Currently manage the requirements gathering, design, development, implementation, deployment,

QA, maintenance, tuning and some training of 90% of Arch’s BI projects and host practically of

the reporting on our Cognos 7 & 8 BI servers. We are fully responsible for all thing Cognos BI

related in the company.

• Fully responsible for creating Data Marts to store extracted data from 20+ application

systems via SQL Server ETL tools SSIS and formerly DTS. We currently manage about 40

nightly/weekly ETL jobs which we were solely responsible for the full implementation. We

currently manage over 1000 tables holding about 50 million rows of data.

• Responsible for all Cognos Framework development which includes both secured and

unsecured projects.

• Developed hundreds of reports of various levels complexity (adhoc, scheduled, bursting,

integrated, etc). They are developed via Reporting Studio and Query Studio. These reports are

delivered to users via the Cognos 8 portal, Go! Office, email, Sharepoint and integrated into

applications via Cognos URLs and SDK applets.

• Developed 10’s of Cognos power cubes via Transformer 7.4 and 8.4. These are integrated

with Report studio reports and other cubes for drill through capablilties. These cubes are

delivered to Analysis Studio users via the Cognos 8 portal, Go! Office, email, Sharepoint and

integrated into applications via Cognos URLs.

• We also do quite a bit of reconciliation analysis via reports and cubes for integrated systems

to assure shared data is consistent between them.

• Fully responsible for all aspects of SQLServer 2005 administration of our Data mart servers.

This includes tuning, monitoring, stored procedures, functions, indexes, views etc. we are not

responsible for backing up the data.

• Quite a bit of our development was initially done using Cognos 7. We have since migrated

most to Cognos 8, rarely using Cognos’ migration tools. This involved full redevelopment of the

reports and cubes.

• We also fully manage the Cognos servers’ administration (installations, upgrades, fixes, user

management, security, deployment). Currently we support about 600 users.

• We have direct contact to most of the end users from the CEO down to the receptionists. This

may be for full requirements gathering or a simple how-to session.

• Currently managing external consultants working on three new TM1 9.4 projects for the

organization. We are responsible for the TM1 servers administration and will be responsible for

maintenance, fixes and enhancements when this initial stage is completed. I currently have one

of my team members dedicated to supplying data and guidance to the TM1 team.

• We provide supplemental training directly to end users to fill gaps left by our training group.

• Since Arch was a new company when I joined in 2002, I personally brought Cognos in using

Senior Business Systems Analyst/Project Leader

Data warehouse / Business Intelligence

• Planned, designed and developing a data warehouse for division. This involved installation, and

administration of NT 4.0 and SQL Server 2000 Servers, designed and developed Cognos

Impromptu Catalogs and PowerPlay Cubes with subsequent reports. I chose the hardware (Dell

PowerEdge), Platform (NT 4.0 Server), Database Software (MS SQL Server 2000), Front-end

reporting tool (Cognos Impromptu 6.0), OLAP tool (Cognos PowerPlay 6.6). The sources of data

were from different databases such as DB2/MVS, MS SQL Server 6.5, Sybase System 11, MS

Access and MS Excel spreadsheets. Data extraction, scrubbing and cleansing are being done

using MS SQL Server 2000’s Data Transformation Service. Installed and configured Cognos

Enterprise Server 6.61 and Impromptu Web Reports Server 6.1 along with MS Internet

Information Server (IIS) 5.0 and Netscape Directory Server 4.11. Published all scheduled and

some ad-hoc reports and OLAP cubes giving our users fully web based reporting and analysis

capabilities.

• Created Impromptu database catalogues of claims processing application’s database to provide

reporting support to the division. Created Data Model of these databases through Reverse

Engineering with Powersoft S-Designor AppModeler.

• Analyzed data requests from Senior Officers and produce Insurance financial data from DB2

databases, using QMF/SQL, IBM AS and/or Impromptu, in report, Excel, Access database, or

ASCII text formats. This has been retired in favor of the Cognos initiative previously mentioned.

• This project supported 100+ users accessing over 20 million rows of claims, underwriting and

insurance accounting information.

Web-based/Client-Server applications

• Developed a web-based application to assist in a customer improvement initiative. This was a

rapid application development, which was completed in 8 workdays. This effort saved the

company $50,000 and 2 months (amount of money and time a consulting firm had proposed).

• Project Lead on a divisional Intranet website development. Team consisted of two Web

Programmers, three Business Systems Analysts and one Marketing Manager. The two-month

project was completed in-house as proof that a content based website can be developed at

minimal cost.

• Redesigned an Employee Performance Appraisal reporting application, which will use Insurance

financial information to evaluate every employee including senior management annual

performance. This application is being developed in MS Access 2.0 with SQL Server backend.

• Planned, designed and developed a Training and Developing database and application using

Visual Basic 4.0 with MS Access/SQL Server as the database.

• Rebuilt an MS Access application using SQL Server as the database that analyzed employees

annual performance and set salary increase range based on the employees performance, position

in the salary band, date of last raise, etc.

• Maintained and enhanced an MS Access database application that is used to store personnel

information on the employees of our division.

Other technologies

• Implemented a fax server (AVT RightFax 7.0) with the ability to send and receive faxes via MS

Exchange. Currently researching Voice mail server to also enable receipt via e-mail, completing

the Unified Messaging (UM) initiative.

• Troubleshoot and Analyze various other applications and software for the division such as MS

Sharepoint and Compaq Ipaq PocketPC. Developed various smaller applications.

• I was part of a management team charged with overseeing the upgrade of over 350 PC’s. We

managed a team of about 20 Dell and Bluecurrent employees for seven nights. This process

involved backing up relevant data from the each users old PC, installing the new PC, restoring the

their data and look and feel of the old PC.

• Analyze data requests from doctors, administrative staff or data custodians and produce data from

DB2 databases, using QMF/SQL, in report, Paradox or Access database, mail merge or ASCII

text formats.

• Developed an MS Access application that downloads DASD information from mainframe to PC.

Using REXX, a CLIST job output is read into a dataset, which is then nightly FTP to ASCII text.

• Developed another MS Access application in which options chosen is then sent to TSO as

variables in a JCL.

• Made a data model for existing Paradox tables using ERwin reverse engineering.
