Significant Accomplishments
1. During 38 years of employment with Marathon Oil Company in its
petroleum
Refining Division, I continually championed and led the change in
safety programs from a rules based model to an ultimately successful
behavioral
based one. Using the behavioral model resulted in establishing
employee
personal responsibility for safety, both individually and
collectively. OSHA
recognized Marathon's significant contribution to industrial
safety with the
the STAR award, the highest award given to employers, resulting
in reduced
OSHA inspection frequencies and a larger degree of self-
direction in accord
with the aims and goals of the OSHA organization. As a result
of the reduction
in injuries our cost of workmen's compensation as well as
costs of non-
compliance fines and penalties was reduced significantly. The
resulting
increase in operating efficiency and improvement in onstream
time for the
refineries was pivotal in establishing a sound basis for
financial opportunity
optimization through improved production planning and reducing
outside
supplier reliance for unforecast product shortfall
remediation.
2. As Manager of Operations of the seven refineries in Marathon's
refining
Organization I pioneered a shift in business strategy through
establishment of
a cross-functional relationship among economics, production
planning and sales
and marketing organizations to rationalize the utilization of
Marathon's
petroleum, transportation, marketing and refining
organizations. Resulting
efficiency improvements were greater than 15% rate of return.
3. As Marathon's designated Refinery Expert on staff of the Vice
President, Refining I introduced and championed a
partnership initiative with our major
Technology providers in which they would share in the risks and
rewards of
process technology improvements. The International Allinace Group, a
division
of Tapco was the pattern setting proposal for the partnership
philosophy.
Significant issues in partnering were not technological but business
model offset
Issues were the most frequent oppositional issues. Significant
improvement in
technology development costs were realized resulting in 20% project
technology
cost reduction in aggregate.
4. As Manager of Products Control and Marine Transportation at
Marathon's
Louisiana Refining Division I restructured our business model to
include real-
time economic opportunity presented by the daily flow of feedstocks
and products
-2-
along the Mississippi river bordering our marine docks,
contributing 7%
improvement to our Division's profitability.uite
5. When the necessity of producing ultra-low sulfur gasolines
became evident, I
invented and patented a novel process for desulfurizing naphthas
which used
Liquid Crystal membranes as a noncatalytic process to eliminate the
use of
precious metals and to reduce the sunk capital costs of
desulfurization
technology to Marathon.
6. To protect the health and safety of the employees of the Marathon
organization
and its contract workforce in an essentially rural setting, I led
the formation of an in-house medical Trauma and high-angle rescue
team, being as well an active
and functional team member of both the Trauma Rescue team and the
onsite
Fire Department. Our members served as well on community rescue and
fire response departments significantly contributing to Marathon's
reputation as a
responsible member of the community safety resource.
