Electrical Engineering Intern
Jefferson Lab is a national laboratory that operates a continuous electron
beam accelerator to study the properties of matter. My project was to
design a redundant PID (Proportional, Integral, Derivative) temperature
controller to maintain constant temperature of the linear accelerators.
For this design, a Freescale 56F8323 DSC was selected. The controller
featured PWM, PID loop, RS485 communication to the control room interface,
RS232 communication to a local temperature LCD display, inputs from three
temperature sensors and diagnostics test points. The program was written
in C and the PID loop was determined using the Ziegler-Nichols method. The
project was a success for Jefferson Lab and was also used as my senior
project for ODU. I received a grade of +A.
