WHsmith is a well known retail shop of Europe.

It has 1400 outlets across the EUROPE.The major business use to happen from

UNITED KINGDOM

The business is basically related to all types of Teravel

books,stationaries,online travel booking etc.They use to grow the business

regularly with selling new products.

The datawarehousing is based on analytical purpose of business growth.The

datawarehouse is in Teradata database for past ten years.

The one warehouse is having production, development and testing databases.

The num ber of users are arroud 1500,who regularly use the database for

analysis of the business.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Daily Activities:

Checking the regular online backups,to complete properly.

Troubleshooting the backups by NETVAULT

Checking the spaces in the production databases.

Checking the AMP space using ferret utility.

Daily reports generations.

Managing all the users quries by changing the priorities.

Creation of roles,profiles,giving proper accessrights.

All Dba relates activities through PMON,TERADATA MANAGER,SQL ASSISTANCE.

Project Description:

At&T is world's one of the most well known and bighest Telecom

company.There are 33 markets in usa in which their telecom services is

going on.I am working here in the ATT's datawarehouse, which is again

world's one of the largest DW system in the world.It's a active dw

system.(ADW)

ATT has lots of teradata system,in which I am working as production dba for

7 teradata production systems at a time.

All the systems have different names and database servers are in different

locations.

The systems for which I am responsible are

1,ATTBH01:Very large system of 627 terabyte

2.ATTSL01:Very large system of 327 terabyte

3.BDRP

4.WDW

5.RDW

6.ATTA7

7.ATTP6

I am a part of AMDOCS DBA team which consists of 5 team member including 3

offshore and 2 onsite people.

The teradata systems are very well managed and maximized to automation.

Informatica is used as ETL tool for max of the systems and Businees object

is used as reporting tool.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Activities:

1.Monitor seven teradata database system at a time.

Teradata view point (web version of TD manager) we use maximum to monitor

the system.Blocking,deadlocking etc we use to see from TD viewpoint.

2.Resolving issues related to loading:it consists of proper analysis of

everything for any failure in teradata.Then only go for the resolution.

Ex: Any locking issue, spool space issue,any delay query,SQL tunning-proper

root cause analysis of everything,then only give the selution to the user.

If necessary I have to send the proper analysis to ATT dba's(our client).On

basis of that analysis they use to take the step.

3.Backups: In this datawarehouse each system has different backup

strategies.

Daily,weekly and monthly backups use to run in all the systems.The big

systems had Veritas netbackup and small systems has Netvault installed as

the backup tool.

For BH01,SL01 system we have daily backups which we use to launch and until

finish any issue is there we neeed to troubleshoot.

For P6 and A7 system archive jobs are scheduled by TWS(Tivoli Work

scheduler).The archive jobs use to logon to netvault.We need to monitor the

jobs and if any failure issue or struck state occurs..we need to

troubleshoot it and find the root cause for failure and use to take

decision on that basis we diagnose the problem.

Weekly Backups:All the systems have Weekly archives for different

databases.The weekly archive needs support for 24*7.We use to take care of

weekly backups for all the systems.Starting from launching the job to end

them we need to take care.If any problem occurs we need to find the root

cause within 15 mins.And troubleshoot the failed archive.For this sometime

we need to contact to some other team to advice them to do the right thing

to troubleshoot the failed backup.

All these backups are online backups

Ex:The backups which are happening through netvault:We are here to monitor

their weekly jobs and TWS team use to launch the jobs.Any failed happen

then we need to contact to 4 other teams after finding the root cause

within 15 mins.It contains the team like Sysadmin,TWS team,lead person for

that system.Based on our analysis the lead use to assist whether to

resubmit the failed weekly jobs or not.Because there are SLA for those

jobs.If time permits with approval from the lead the TWS team use to

relaunch the job.

All these backups are online backups

Monthly Backups: Every third weekend of the month max system use to have

their full system backups.Starting from launching the backups till to the

end we use to work for the systems which are having veritus

netbackup.Netvault backups use to fired by TWS team.

All these are offline backups.

Sql tunning: We use to tune the sql whenever necessary,like in case of

spool space error.We cannot change the spool limit for the user,rather than

we need to find the reason for spool out and tune the sql properly by

keeping the same business logic,which is really a challenge.

Alerts: All the systems has lots of alerts specified.Crossing thethreshold

we use to get the alerts in mail.That consist of blocking,space,bacup

completion,hardware issues.. and lots of other alerts also.So it's our duty

to take proper action on the alerts.

Apart from these in this project another big task is communication.I use to

handle lots of teams who are involved in loading.It's around a team of 200

people who are working in ATT DW including offshore and onsite team.So

reguraly attending meeting and communicate to onsite(us) is another big day

to day task.

Technology : All the teradata systems are most upgraded and using the TD

12 database.

This is the project of Vodafone datawarehouse.there are five source system

from which data is coming.The total data is loaded in the datawarehousing

production box.The final reportings are done from this system.Total

analytical process for the months are going here.

Five source systems are

1.RCDR

2.MCDR

3.BACS.

4CRM.

5.CRS

Surrogate keys are generated on the raw data then they are loaded into the

system.Finally it's end with SAS reporting.

SAS is the tool which is used for reporting.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Daily Activities:

> 24*7 DBA Production support

Checking the spaces in the production databases.

Making the data validation scripts,taking backups and if necessary

restoration of the backups.

After addition of the nodes making sure that the available data is correct

before giving the system to the users.

Recent Implementation: Per second billing in mobile.

Challenges:

The biggest challenge in the warehouse is system

performance optimization.

Managing the proper space in teradata production system and query

optimization is the real challenge.

Giving suggestion to the client for changes of views

and table structures and giving suggestion for proper indexing in the total

system to optimize the performance.

#4.Project Description

CLIENT: BHARTI AIRTEL.

Organization:Mahindra Satyam(Previously Satyam Computer Services Ltd)

Bharti Airtel is among India's largest mobile phones and fixed network

operators. The company is the only GSM operator to provide mobile services

in all the 23 circles. The company also provides telephone services and

Internet access over 14 circles.

Bharti Airtel EDW implemented a data warehouse to better plan and manage

revenue realization, customer retention and acquisition and also to

establish a data warehouse of usage, billing and provisioning information

for the Mobility and Infotel business units.

The main objectives of the data warehouse are as follows:

. Reduction of revenue leakage from under billing of usage and usage

analysis.

. Basic Profitability Analysis to identify customers who are

profitable to Bharti based on their usage behaviour.

. Identify the target audience for a proposed tariff plan based on

usage behavior of subscriber.

. Identify the Impact of a Tariff Plan based on change in usage

behavior after the tariff plan introduction.

. Identify Target market of subscribers from analysis of the incoming

calls (from the Calling Number).

. CDR Reconciliation across Interconnect, Mediation and Billing.

. The data warehouse has been built using Teradata and the reports are

developed using Business objects. This system effectively addresses

the business intelligence requirements of the company.

production by following the implementation process.

. Tuning regularly the SQL triggered by Ad-hoc users and guiding

them how to use SQL Assistant to write SQL's if required apart

from the backend tuning.

. Taking necessary action to avail the Database resource like spool

space efficiently and ensure the Database High availability for

Business and Batch Jobs.

. Maintaining the Teradata Space efficiently for Business and batch

jobs by ensuring the Data currency is up to date.

. Tuning the database so as to provide the expected performance

. Writing STATS COLLECT scripts based on the existing as well as

adhoc queries and ETL loading scripts.

#5Project Description and role

CLIENT: BARCLAYS (United Kingdom)

Organization:Mahindra Satyam(Previously Satyam Computer Services Ltd)

Barclays Bank PLC is one of the largest banks in UK. It has its operations

distributed across several locations. Data from various source systems is

fed into the EDW (Enterprise Data Warehouse). This process includes

extracting the data from these source systems, applying transformations and

loading the data after the query tuning and performance check. The process

of Extraction, transformation, compare and loading of the Data from Oracle

/ DB2 into the Data warehouse is done using the Teradata Client Utilities

like Fastload and Multiload. Coding of the processes is done using Teradata

SQL and Bteq scripts. These processes are scheduled to run daily, weekly or

monthly. Barclays has observed a significant difference in terms of

performance and cost after migrating to Teradata. Teradata SQL and Client

Utilities have played a significant role in migrating the data to Data

warehouse and achieving the expected gains.

Satyam Computer Services Ltd has an Offshore Development Centre(ODC) that

caters to certain Data Warehousing requirements of the bank.

A DBA team member and I conduct code reviews on the SQL code developed at

the ODC for conformance to policies and standards set by Barclays Data

Warehousing Services and also do troubleshooting for users.

Contribution

> Conduct SQL code reviews as per Barclays standards and best practices

recommended by NCR

Advise tuning solutions for SQL's with potential performance problems.
