RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

GE GLOBAL RESEARCH BANGALORE, INDIA

Research Assistant/Consultant - Momentive Performance Materials

September 2007-July 2008

. Project: "Synthesis of Siloxane Copolymer Separator for Lithium Ion

Batteries": Synthesized siloxane copolymers, which could serve as a

potential candidate electrolyte for LiPo batteries, with desired ionic

conductivity range (10-4 - 10-5 S/cm), good mechanical stability,

lower cost and increased thermo-oxidative stability and high

dielectric constant.

. Used techniques such as NMR, IR, and ion conductivity measurement

UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER DEPT. OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING ROCHESTER, NY

Graduate Research Assistant 2009-Present

. Thesis Title: "Effect of Crosslinking in Initiated Chemical Vapor

Deposition of Polymers": Studying the effect of crosslinking in thin

polymer films (PMMA, PGMA). Introduce and control morphological

structures in the polymer films.

. Project: "Initiated Chemical Vapor Deposition of Polymers at Ambient

Conditions": Demonstrate that iCVD can be performed directly on non-

cooled substrates, outside of the vacuum chamber, which reduces the

expense of a vacuum system and as well as pump down procedures.

Demonstrate that iCVD provides a method of coating non-flat substrates

where cooling is impossible.

. Used techniques including White Light Interferometer, GC, GPC,

Profilometer, FTIR, Contact angle measurement, AFM, Spectroscopic

Ellipsometer.

BHARAT ELECTRONICS LTD (BEL) - WATER PURIFICATION PLANT

BANGALORE, INDIA

Summer Research Intern June 2007-October 2007

. Project: "Improvements of Prefiltration of Reverse Osmosis Plant":

Studied the factors affecting the early failure of the micron filters

and improved the working efficiency of reverse osmosis filters.

Through experimentation, identified problem areas and solutions for

the longevity and efficient and economic working of filters.

ASTRA ZENECA PVT. LTD. BANGALORE, INDIA

Undergraduate Researcher January 2007-June 2007

. Project: "Safe Scale-up of an Esterification Reaction": Scaled up an

esterification reaction in a cylindrical reactor. Learned about the

cooling and temperature dynamics of the reaction mass, keeping in mind

process safety, which plays a very crucial step in scaling runaway

reactions. Modeled a reactor after the Mettler Toledo Reaction

calorimeter used by the laboratory. Conducted numerical simulation

studies with help of 2D modeling using FEMLAB 3.0; verified the

hydrodynamics.

Papers AND PRESENTATIONS

. Kavya Ramachandra, Mitchell Anthamatten. "Effect of crosslinking on iCVD

of Polymer films," in process.

. Kavya Ramachandra, Guy Mongelli, Mitchell Anthamatten. "Initiated

Chemical Vapor Deposition of Polymers at Ambient Conditions," in process.

. Paper presented on "Microfluidics" at a National level Technical

Symposium in M. V. Jayaram Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India in

April 2007.
