Purchasing Agent
Procured manufacturing materials without the
assistance of an MRP/ERP or other prediction tools.
Items were acquired with as little as one day JIT
from requisitions or verbal input. Weekly sales
order releases for buses and cars were provided to
identify purchased items from production items so
that I could order some long lead time products
without a formal purchase order in an attempt to
compensate for the lack of a materials planning
system.

1987-1994 Orbit Valve Company Little Rock,
Arkansas
Buyer
Using a weekly generated MRP and requisitions as
needed, I was responsible for procuring over 20,000
items used in the process to manufacture oil
valves. Additional responsibilities included
scheduling for outside powder coating, nickel or
cadmium plating of procured items and painting for
the finished valve. As one of three buyers, my
portion of in-house inventory was to be maintained
at about 2 million dollars while minimizing lead
times and accelerating production schedules. Among
other special assignments I was a member of the ISO
9000 Team when Orbit began the process for ISO
approval.
1984-1987 The L.S. Starrett Company Mt. Airy,
North Carolina
Purchasing Coordinator
As the Assistant to the Purchasing Agent I
coordinated everything in the Purchasing
Department. The Mt. Airy division of The L.S.
Starrett Company was in its infancy when I was
employed there. Because of this, they were running
the facility with a skeleton crew. I was able to
alleviate the company need of multiple employees by
integrating the position of the Assistant to the
Coordinate Measuring Machine Division's Supervisor
into my duties. In that capacity, I scheduled the
trips for [4] men who traveled to service and
repair machines. After their trips, I was
responsible for the accounting of all of their
expenditures back to the main office in Athol,
Massachusetts.
Qualifications
The Purchasing positions I filled, particularly at
the Orbit Valve Company in Little Rock, was high
profile as it related to the other departments.
Skills in organization, with a strong emphasis on
details were a must. In the manufacturing
environment, departmental continuity and the
ability to maintain a friendly yet orderly work
relationship were a challenge and a wonderful
learning experience. With the requirements of
Production Control, Quality Control, Engineering
and the expectation of satisfying the end user, I
was able to strike a balance that was not only
commended by my Supervisors, but also respected by
my colleagues.
