Design Engineer

Mechanical engineer with a strong record of driving cost reductions in both

design and processes, product fit and functionality improvements through

creative design and application or process improvements. Extensive

knowledge of manufacturing processes by working through the ranks, from the

shop floor to engineering. Competencies include innovative design,

improvements to metal processing, manufacturing and fabrication;

experienced in machine design and assembly software packages such as,

ProEngineer, Solidworks and other leading design packages. Skilled in the

use of Microsoft Office suite. BSMET, MBA in Management, MBA in Finance

and Marketing.

EXPERIENCE

Calgon Carbon Corporation, Catlettsburg, Ky

[Calgon Carbon Corporation (Calgon) is a provider of products, services,

and solutions for purifying water and air. The Company operates in three

segments: Activated Carbon and Service, Equipment, and Consumer. The

Activated Carbon and Service segment manufactures granular and powdered

activated carbon for use in applications to remove organic compounds from

water, air, and other liquids and gases. The Equipment segment provides

solutions to customers' air and water purification problems through the

design, fabrication, installation, and sale of equipment systems that

utilize a combination of the Company's enabling technologies: carbon

adsorption, ultraviolet light (UV), and advanced ion exchange separation

(ISEP). The Consumer segment primarily consists of the manufacture and sale

of carbon cloth, and new consumer products. ]

Operations Manager/Coach

2010 to Present

As a line manager/coach, I was tasked to manage a production line which

operated twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. My responsibilities

included three shifts, weekends and twenty operations personnel.

SSP Fittings, Inc., Twinsburg, OH

[SSP Fittings Corp manufactures of Hydraulic & instrumentation Tube, Hose,

and Pipe fittings and valves. SSP Fittings Corp designs & produces

hydraulic & instrumentation tube fittings & valves made from stainless

steel, Monel , brass and other exotic alloys. ]

Product Design Engineer 2006 to 2010

As part of the product development team, I was challenged to create valves

and fittings with higher working pressures such as a 10,000 psi. a large

ball valve, build up a fabrication cell with the capabilities of creating

multi-plane bent tube and to increase hose fitting offering for use with

hydraulic hoses, rubber, thermoplastic, and PTFE. Provide technical

support for current product offerings to: quality control, vendors,

subcontractors, marketing and end users. Assist end-users and address

quality issues, and finding cost reductions.

. Changed material and manufacturing process for one component used in a

fitting assembly resulting in a cost reduction of 50%.

. Designed a 10, 000 psi ball valve for high pressure applications

including alternative fuels.

. Redesigned fitting eliminate possible leak paths. As a result a 22%

cost reduction was found and a 30% reduction in returns for failure.

Saint-Gobain Crystal, Newbury, OH

[US division of global leader in the manufacture and development of

engineered materials i.e. glass, insulation, reinforcements, containers,

building materials, ceramics and plastics.]

Lead Product Engineer 2005 to 2006

Recruited for a challenging role to identify and initiate manufacturing

process improvements. Initial efforts were focused on improving yields in

a product line with limited availability of raw materials on the world

market. Responsibilities included technical support for current product

offerings to: quality control, vendors and subcontractors, marketing and

end users and assisted end-users with designs, quality issues and for cost

reductions.

. Changed manufacturing processes on creating glass lenses encased in

metal to successfully increase yields by 93%.

. Designed a mold and sourced new material for a shock absorbing rubber

boot that increased production from 2 to 6 per shift.

Parker Hannifin, Mayfield, OH 1983 to 2005

[A $10 billion world leader diversified in the manufacture of motion and

control technologies.]

Resident Product Engineering (Parker representative at Freightliner Corp.),

Portland, OR 2003 to 2005

Assisted customer by verifying Parker components for new designs and

replaced competitor's products with Parker products for 18 Freightliner

product lines.

. Drove $4.5 million in cost reduction by consolidating the 12 fitting

lines to 3, interfacing with vendor and key customers.

. Drove $2.3 million in cost reduction by 28 hose offerings to13 for the

world market.

. Developed a portable crimper with the lightest possible material while

using existing tooling.

Product Engineer, Ravenna, OH 1993 to 2003

Designed, developed and tested new products. Worked with purchasing to

identify and evaluate processes, vendors and subcontractors. Traveled to

vendor or subcontractors to verify manufacturing capabilities, quality

compliance and drive cost reductions.

. Visited end-users to assist with design and quality issues and to

review usage for cost reductions.

. Assisted sales and marketing in providing new tools and information.

. Developed prototype products on a 3/16" DOT approved hose for use with

the braking system of a marine trailer and for the fuel system of a

diesel locomotive engines

Production and Production Supervisor, Ravenna, OH 1983 to 1993

Setup and operated every piece of equipment located on the

manufacturing floor for six and a half years. Supervised two departments:

Reinforcement Department - added either a fiber or metal reinforcement to

the core tube of a hose. Second process in the creation of a high pressure

hose, Harness Assembly Department - Bundled, fabricated, and formed

tubing into an assembly for the air braking system used on Semi-Tractor

Cabs.

ADDITIONAL INTRESTS

University of Akron, Akron, OH

Summit College. Instruct lectures and labs to future mechanical engineering

technology students.

Part-time Instructor: Kinematics, Thermo-Fluid Power, Thermodynamics,

Intro. to Machine Design.

TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS

Four patents: one patent for the design of a unibody light weight design of

a crimping apparatus; one patent was a utility patent for a crimping

apparatus. A crimper is used to deform the metal casing around the end of

a piece of hose to compress the hose between the metal casing and a barbed

nipple.
