Novell to Active Directory Systems Engineer / Groupwise Migration

Consultant

The engineer position with B2B is part of a 4 person infrastructure team

handling the migration project for the Georgia State University from their

current Novell Groupwise email system to Microsoft's BPOS Cloud Computing

Exchange mail system. The GSU university email system has 6800 staff and

faculty members that are migrating from Novell Groupwise to Microsoft's

BPOS to cut the equipment and management costs of maintaining a on premise

Exchange email system. Working with Microsoft's consultants and using the

Quest migration tools the team is delivering a scope of work, migration

strategy, and techincal overview to make this project deliverable by early

2010.

The second stage of this migration project includes moving their current

Novell 6.5 network environment to a Microsoft Active Directory environment

using the Quest migration tools also. The network environment is composed

of 400 to 600 VMWare, Novell, Microsoft, Unix, and Linux servers, QIP is

their TCP/IP management platform which is upgrading to Blue Cat for DHCP

and DNS resolution. The worksation enironment is a mixed environment of

Windows XP, Windows Vista 32 and 64-bit, Windows7 32 and 64-bit. The

project goal is to have all of the Novell Servers, users and appropriate

ACL's, shared resources, and printers migrated to the new AD environment

within a 1-3 year window.

Senior Systems Engineer / Groupwise Consultant

Working as part of a 4 person network team managing 30 regional offices

consisting of 60+ Dell Servers and 1000 desktop and laptop computers

across the U.S. running VmWare, SUSE Linux Novell Enterprise servers and a

Microsoft Active Directory environment running Oracle 7 database

applications as the backbone of the company's accounting and inventory

control system via Terminal Services. Smoothstone Voice over IP services

using Cisco 7940 phone systems and data T-1 circuits backboned to Cisco

routers allow connectivity to the 30 regional offices with the home office

in Roswell, GA. Responsibilities include daily maintenance and system

checks on Novell and Microsoft servers as needed, with a focus on the

Groupwise 8.0 email servers along with managing and designing corporate

application software installations via Novell's Zenworks application

manager. Server management with Solarwinds software and remote desktop

control across the company using WinVNC software on all client computers to

allow problem resolution helpdesk support with every computer in the

business on a day to day use. I handle many of the day to day spyware and

virus issues on the desktop systems and have to create an arsenal of tools

to combat those daily issues. My position here is very multi-versed and

faceted as in every job I have encountered working on everything from

servers to PC's and more with only a team of 4 people which requires great

communication and teamwork to be successful.

Senior Systems Engineer/Consultant

Part of a four person Network Team implementing a migration plan from a

Novell 6.X network environment to a Microsoft Active Directory environment

integrating new HP Servers and Dell workstations and laptops. T-3 and T-1

circuits backbone to Cisco routers to allow connectivity to regional

offices in three different states and five different cities allowing

connectivity to the home office in Nashville, TN. The team handles the

network management of 35+ servers and computers using Novell 6X Data

Servers and a 6.5 Groupwise Email Server using Zenworks application and

remote desktop management on all client computers. Management of the

Microsoft Windows 2003 Servers, Exchange Servers, VMWare Servers, and many

SQL Database Servers using Microsoft SQL and other .NET platforms. Use of

an EMC SAN storage system for data storage and daily backups along with

onsite tape storage using Netbackup software connected via a Cisco gigabyte

fiber backbone structure in a server farm environment. The team manages

the corporate telephone systems using Cisco VOIP 7940 equipment and a call

recording system for the 24 hour call center, Cisco WiFi equipment exists

in all offices to allowing WiFi laptop network access. Handle everything

from the file servers administration and Groupwise email administration to

the general help desk support calls on all computer issues for 300+ users

in five regional offices. Handle the whole network as a team and have to

work on immediate issues as they occur. Use Zenworks PC imaging software

and Ghost imaging is used for ten different hardware platforms to allow

rollouts of all desktop systems. Provide network security help and

technical support for all customers working in the hospitals using Verizon

mobile access on the road across the US to connect to the office. Daily

responsibilities include research and design, server and PC management,

budgeting, purchasing, network cabling, video conferencing support, desktop

support, virus, spyware and malware issues, and working on problems via the

Magic help desk software. Position here is multifaceted, work on

everything from servers to the PC's themselves, with only a team of four

people everyone works as a team to be successful.

This firm is a multi-million dollar organ and tissue recovery company whose

staff operates on a 24x7 work period and uses many high tech products to be

a successful business. A few major accomplishments have been implementing

a Barracuda Spam hardware appliance blocking nearly 127,000 spam messages

daily, a new Cisco Firewall VPN appliance that replaced the older

Watchguard equipment and all new servers, laptops and desktop computers for

the firm that have not been replaced in over five years. This now allows

every user in the firm to be more productive and all mobile users who

travel to the hospitals, connectivity to the home office securely so they

may access all Novell Servers and email as well as all Intranet

applications. This job has many daily challenges due to an infrastructure

that was incorrectly designed five years ago. This business has grown

significantly in the last seven months since being here and as a team are

correcting more technical problems to allow this company a positive future

with connectivity and communication success.

topology of this network is approximately 15 Novell 3.12 fileservers with

Hubs, with CISCO routers to communicate with the remote offices via 56KB,

128KB ISDN or T-1 line. Remote dial-in projects and enterprise backups were
