Senior Software Analyst
In my contract position as Senior Software Analyst I work as part of a
software asset management team to analyze and review software usage and
ownership to optimize the ROI the client is getting for software purchases.
Using various software tracking and inventory tools I update and maintain
the client database of software that is in use, retired, or about to be
retired. After reviewing entitlements and analyzing various purchase
sources and records, I make recommendations and purchases based on the
needs of the client. I also manage the software packages used to create PC
and laptop images and upgrade or retire those packages and images as
required. Out of a list of 100 critical applications, in 4 months I have
brought approximately 15 apps into compliance and discovered over
$10,000.00 in needless maintenance costs that the client has now saved.
12/2008 - 3/31/2009 Cargill, Inc. Minnetonka,
Minnesota
Senior IT Asset Analyst
In my contract position as Senior IT asset manager I was responsible for
daily maintenance of hardware and software assets over 5 Platforms
containing 27 different international business units. I worked to create a
functioning CMDB for their software as well as managing images and
applications as business units rolled out and retired hardware. I used BMC
Remedy as a ticket tool to manage the requests and used Excel and Access
2007 to keep records of the various licenses that were requested or found
in use by the units.
I cleared out over 50 projects involving on average 60 desktop and laptop
computers in the 3 months I was there, and streamlined the application
request process so the average turn-around time dropped from 30 to 15 days.
1/2008 - 12/2008 Children's Hospitals and Clinics
Roseville, Minnesota
IT Asset Analyst
In my position as asset analyst I was responsible for daily maintenance of
hardware and software assets over 3 different campuses using an ITIL-based
model. I created custom reports using Track-IT and Crystal Reports 9 to
provide information on software and hardware assets currently deployed.
Using those reports I planned and managed hardware upgrades and moves and
software rollouts.
I built and installed gold images that were going out on new laptops and
desktops and provided hardware and software upgrades to desktop PCs that
were still on Windows XP.
I spearheaded the project to upgrade end user Dell PCs to Microsoft Vista,
assisting in rolling out new helpdesk software and procedures, and
addressing the findings of an external audit that required tracking of all
mobile computing devices including tablets, laptops, PDAs and projectors.
I organized and managed the transition of over 300 thin clients to laptop
and tablet PCs including all of the documentation and verifying that the
asset tracking was done and noted accurately in the asset database of Track-
It. I was also responsible for proper disposal of IT assets and keeping
records of disposed assets.
I worked with Purchasing to maintain inventory at the campuses and
consulted with the Contracts department to evaluate and make
recommendations regarding the purchase and/or renewals of support contracts
for IT assets.

EXPERIENCE (cont.):
11/2007 - 1/2008 Unisys Eagan, Minnesota
System Support Field Engineer
Responsibilities included taking assigned client calls and going to
customer sites to make hardware repairs to Dell laptops, desktops, and
servers. I replaced motherboards, displays, power supplies, and any other
field replaceable units required to return device to full operating status.
I provided service by contacting the client, maintaining SLA parameters and
resolution time, track, and follow up on cases where the first call was
unable to resolve the issue. Performed second level troubleshooting and
assisted customer in getting resolution in those cases where the first
diagnosis or solution was ineffective. Maintained the highest level of
customer support and satisfaction in all cases through customer service
skills and communication with customer.
4/2007 - 11/2007 UnitedHealth Group Minnetonka, Minnesota
Software Compliance Analyst
In my contract position as an analyst I was responsible for monitoring
usage of high cost software and scheduling uninstall deployments to remove
unused installations of applications. I was also responsible for working
with the mergers and acquisitions department to incorporate the software
and maintenance agreements owned by the acquisition into the enterprise
database.
I worked with the application owners to verify usage and forecasted install
numbers to deliver numbers at true-up time for the amounts the enterprise
should spend on the applications.
I kept track of which versions of software were approved for installation
and set up deployments to have versions removed and upgraded to enterprise
standards.
4/2002 - 4/2007 Intermountain Health Care Salt Lake City, Utah
Software Asset Manager/Project Manager
In my position as Asset Manager and Project Manager I implemented a
tracking and recording process for hardware and software assets, maintain
legal compliance with software licenses, and created policies for users
regarding software usage. As a project manager I was responsible for all
stages of project implementation for new or updated software releases, from
assembling a team and managing resources, to tracking and keeping projects
on schedule and within budget parameters.
As part of the Desktop Support team I also used BMC Remedy help desk
console, and provided support using Console One and ZenWorks for both
remote repair of desktops and for inventory purposes as most servers ran on
Novell.
Within my first year I had reconciled and brought into compliance over 100
different software applications, streamlined the software ordering and
installing process to eliminate 90% of the paperwork and cut down customer
wait time by 2-3 weeks in most cases.
I wrote and implemented a "best use" policy for software usage and
procurement and work as a liaison between Corporate Purchasing and Health
Plans.
I reviewed, evaluated, and purchased software for use in the Health Plans
division, negotiating with vendors for initial costs as well as maintenance
and support costs. I negotiated license terms and worked with vendors to
establish a positive business relationship and evaluate their performance
based on meeting annual service goals.
I created and presented quarterly updates to the IT Steering Committee
describing the project process and new updates that had occurred.
Michael C. Kerns (cont.)
EXPERIENCE (cont.):
I also managed Implementation Plans for new software implementations into
the various testing and production environments used by the software
development team at Health Plans and the eventual application into live
production. I coordinated efforts and communication between the various IT
departments and individual developers, testers, project managers, and
business analysts.
