Past and ongoing Projects
1. Enhanced Oil Recovery, Jan. 2009~present, Rice University, advisor: Dr. George Hirasaki.
Working on several EOR projects for oil companies by using different methods, such as surfactant,
alkaline, polymer and CO2 flooding. Successfully developed a systematical method for quantitative
analysis of EOR surfactants. Evaluate the characteristics of crude oils, surfactants and cores, including
acid number, viscosity, surfactant consumption, phase behavior, soap generation, interfacial tension,
core surface area and wettability. Design and conduct flooding tests.
2. Rheology and Dielectric Properties of Complex Systems. Jan 2004~Jan 2009, Doctoral Thesis,
New York University (Polytechnic Institute), advisor: Dr. Jovan Mijovic.
Dynamic behaviors of different systems (polymers, nanocomposites and biomaterials) were extensively
investigated and analyzed. Physical properties, such as glass transition temperature, thermostability,
and rheology, can be predicted by understanding the time scales and length scale of molecular motions.
3. Adsorption of Sugar Based Surfactants at Solid/Liquid Interface. Jun.~Aug. 2006, summer Intern at
Columbia University, advisor: Dr. P. Somasundaran.
Sugar based surfactants (biodegradable), such as alkyl maltosides, were found to have high surface
activity and show synergistic interactions with other surfactants. Specifically, the mechanism of their
adsorption selectivity on various solids was discovered as that the driving force, hydrogen bonding, is
determined by the surface hydroxyl groups. It has applications in mineral processing, water treatment
and oil recovery.
4. Rheological Study of Viscoelastic Surfactant Systems. Aug.2006~Jan.2008, In collaboration with
Columbia University,
The structural evolution of the giant micellar system (VES) with inorganic and organic additives was
investigated, based on which a model was developed to predict the rheological response to
temperature. The findings are useful for developing fracturing fluids for oil industry.
5. Design and Development of Web Base Database for Properties of Organic Chemicals.
Oct.2000~Nov.2002, Tsinghua University, advisor: Dr. Jiding Li.
An organic chemical database was designed and constructed based on ASP and SQL server programs.
Chemical information can be sorted and searched in the database and accessed by public through
internet.
6. Industrial Feasibility of Lubricating Oil Dewaxing using Membrane Separation Technology.
2000~2003, Master Thesis, Tsinghua University, advisor: Dr. Jiding Li.
1
Separation mechanism of the dewaxing solvent from dewaxed oil using polysiloxane membrane was
studied by inverse gas chromatography. Suitable Membrane was synthesized based on diffusion
coefficients and solubility of small molecules in polymer.
