Professional Experience

Systems Architect & Development Lead Sep. 2000 - Jun.

2006

ScerIS, Inc. - Sudbury, MA

On the development team of a small software company specializing

in document imaging and records management, primarily targeting

the health care industry.

Worked directly with customers for the complete life cycle from

specification to delivery and maintenance of custom OCR

extraction components and custom web applications.

Took over the company's second biggest application immediately

after hire, completing half the initial development and

continuing complete ownership ever since, to automate OCR

verification for payment posting via EDI in a sophisticated UI

with a multi-threaded engine interfacing with multiple legacy

database systems.

Re-implemented the core of the ASP and MFC front ends of the main

product as a single WinForms no-touch deployment app in C#.

Authored the MSI-based installer for the company's main product

using WiX. Also contributed to the open-source development of WiX

itself.

Convinced the team to move the main product from a client/server

to a three-tier model, and led the team in implementing a

DCOM-based middle tier. Later participated in replacing this with

.NET enterprise and web services in C# using a SQL Server back

end, rewriting the entire Btrieve data layer in T-SQL.

Participated in the creation of the web interface to the

company's main application, and developed all of the code for

doing client-side viewing, redaction, annotation, and printing of

images, pushing the limits of DHTML to deliver a zero-footprint

browser-based document imaging system.

Created a robust C++ encapsulation of all the ISIS-level scanning

& imaging operations scattered throughout the code.

Maintained & expanded a legacy web imaging system based on

client-side Java and a proprietary TCP protocol, eventually

converting to JSP and then replacing that with ASP.

Created data compression modules for proprietary Huffman and

LZW-based algorithms.

Designed and implemented a much-beloved new user interface option

for organizing medical records into colorful tabs, in the MFC

client and later also on the web.

Designed and implemented a WinForms-based tool to visually guide

users in constructing XPath queries over the DOM of a web page

for screen-scraping integration.

Have been the go-to guy for solving hopeless and mysterious

problems, sometimes going on-site and using WinDbg to resolve

otherwise irreproducible crashes.

Managed several major customer databases in Pervasive, SQL

Server, and MS Access.

Substantially revised & continually maintained the team's

automated batch build process.

Edited & revised the documentation of the main product and

authored all of the documentation for its installer and for

several other products.

Introduced NUnit unit testing to the team's development process

and coded the first unit tests targeting it. Also assisted in

quality assurance by performing manual tests and writing test

plans.

Mentored other team members in COM, MSI, and other technologies.

Functioned as development lead in the final year, with

responsibility for most major technical decisions and for

evaluating candidates for hire.
