Internship & Employment
Intern (Part-time). LACC High Tech Center
Los Angeles, CA
Summer 2007
While being a full-time student at Los Angeles City College (LACC), I
worked this unpaid internship to both gain experience in working in an
office environment and to service the college community. My
responsibilities were to:
* Convert books into Braille and audio media using optical character
recognition software as well as other technologies
* Administer tests as a test aid to the visually impaired
Pastry Design Artist (Part-time). Piece of Cake Bakery
Evansville, IN
December 2001 to September 2003
My responsibilities were to:
* Bake and design pastries
* Record phone orders
* Prepare the kitchen and perform basic maintenance
* Deliver orders
Additionally, I strove to make myself even more value to the team by
completing a set of cake decorating courses. These courses provided me
with the abilities to make a variety of textured cakes and to produce
intricate and detailed designs. I worked this job while I was a high
school student.
Cashier (Part-time). Buehler's Buy Low
Evansville, IN
August 1999 to January 2000
I took this temporary part-time job to earn extra money while in high
school. In addition, to performing the duties of cashier, I also learned
the dynamics and importance of customer service and satisfaction.
Projects
* IS 320 - Quantative Analysis Business Decisions
o Employee Health Plan Project: For this project I used Microsoft
Excel to model health plan options for employees and created an
application that helped employees select the best option for
them based on their family size, expected medical expenses and
income.
* IS 340 - Business Application Programming
o Candy Shop Web-based Ordering System: This ordering system was
designed with VB.NET. This web-based application allowed
clients to place their orders as well as enter payment and
shipping information. Once finished, a receipt would be produced
and order details were stored in a database.
* IS 355 - Business Telecommunications
o Work-Site Networking Project: In this project my team and I
networked three buildings together in a wide area network. The
project constrained us to using certain devices that included
simple wireless access points and routers. We were responsible
for making a shopping list of all the equipment needed to
complete the project along with cost estimates.
* IS 380 - Database Management
o Office Supply Ordering & Inventory System: In this project using
SQL, I built an inventory and ordering system allowing clients
to order office supplies from a warehouse of their choosing that
had the item(s) available. The system kept customer historical
data as well as updated warehouse inventories and generated
various reports.
* IS 385 - Systems Analysis & Design
o Hospital System Design Case: The purpose of this project was to
increase the efficiency of hospital administration and patient
services. My team and I gathered user requirements, conducted
feasibility studies, examined a number or possible solutions,
submitted proposals for schedule and cost estimations and began
to design the system. Design work began with designing forms,
creating relational database diagrams, and then the actual
database was built. The system prototype and documentation was
quickly developed with approval from users throughout the
process. Our final solution was presented to our professor and
peers who posed as stakeholders of the project.
* IS 485 - Information Systems Project
o Job Site Application: This project was a web-based system
allowing clients to create profiles, search and apply for
employment, as well as allowing employers to post jobs and
review submitted job applications. My team used an agile
methodology and produced a four-tier approach to this systems
project. The emphasis was on using modern software engineering
techniques for team organization, communication, documentation,
programming, realistic scheduling, and risk analysis and
control.
* Target Inc. Case Study
o In this extracurricular competition, Target was seeking
suggestions on how to attract more customers into their stores.
My team and I recommended that Target appeal to customers
between the ages of 13 to 25 as this is a large market segment
that spends an estimated $35 billion alone in North America on
apparel. We suggested that Target accomplish this goal by
offering brands and styles that are more popular with this
group. This recommendation was reached after analyzing Target's
sales and financial statements which showed that clothing sales
had decreased and was a drag on their bottom line. Our team
placed 2nd place in this competition!
