. Primary project formed the basis of M.Sc. Responsible for all aspects

of project, including:

o Research and development of new procedures and optimisation of

existing techniques.

o Sourcing of all testing materials in accordance with budget

requirements.

o Management of out-sourcing of specialist testing/profiling

requirements

o Performing all in-house testing, analysis and profiling. This

included:

. Initial Microbial analysis included (e.g. Isolation and

identification of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli from

porcine gut )

. Microbial preparation, utilising aseptic techniques such as

gram staining.Specialized preparation of in house media.

. DNA extraction and analysis, Molecular Identification and

PCR analysis on all samples.

. Current analysis (eg.Isoloation of Lactobacillus,

Bifidobacteria and Coliforms in a murine based feeding

trial utilising a potential prebiotic with the help of an

anaerobic cabinet)

. Secondary project involved the use of DGGE (Denaturing gradient gel

electrophoresis) for the identification of different Lactobacillus

species present in the porcine gut. Denaturing gradient gel

electrophoresis (DGGE) is a molecular fingerprinting method that

separates polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-generated DNA products.

. Part-time lecturer in CIT supervising 4th year students with their

final year projects. Responsibilities included:

o Develop title of project.

o Mentoring of student during their literary review.

o Oversee student during 4-week laboratory project.

o Correct and grade final project.

. Assistant Demonstrator during laboratory tutorials. Tutorials included

a wide range of laboratory techniques such as: Bioprocessing,

Biotechnology, Microbiology and Bioanalytical and Nutrition and food

Science.

Department Of Agriculture - Blood Testing Laboratory, Model Farm Road (May

2007 - September 2007)

. Worked as a QC Technician in there Microbiology laboratory. Duties

included a wide variety of testing according to site SOPs and GMP

standards.

Responsibilities included:

o Compiling samples from national sources (approx 1500 daily)

o Organising and compiling data for each county and for specific

herds.

o Preparation of samples for further analysis.

o Gained an insight into the preparation and completion of an

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

APC Research Lab UCC, Cork (April 2006 -August 2006)

. Undergraduate work placement, as a Research Assistant in the research

laboratories in the department of Microbiology under the supervision

of Dr. Paul O' Toole who is part of Core 4: Bacterial Genomics and

Metagenomics which will contribute to an understanding of mode of

action, microbial signalling and biomarkers, and how changes in

intestinal microbial community relate to health and disease.

Responsibilities included:

o Helping a postgraduate student in the completion of there PhD by

carrying out the following methods on there samples:

o Polymerase Chain Reaction, Agrose Gel Electrophoresis, PCR

Purification using a kit, Digestion, Ligation, Transformation,

Screening for inserts and Plasmid DNA Purification

. Worked as a Sales Assistant for this multinational company in there

Blarney Branch.
