EMPLOYMENT:
ActionEmco, North Bergen, NJ (out of business) Sept 1995 -
Jan 2009
IT Manager Office Products Wholesaler
I was responsible for the company's entire computer infrastructure. I was
also the Unix admin and Informix DBA. The system served approximately 600
users for order entry, accounting and warehouse functions for two
facilities in NJ and MI. I installed and maintained Solaris 7 & 9, Red Hat
Enterprise 5.x, and 160 PC/Windows clients. I was responsible for all of
the company's hardware including Sun 880, 490, 440, X4150, V20z, Dell and
Compaq servers. I utilized Logmein.com, VNC and VPN software for remote
management for after hour issues. I also used VMWare workstation to test
various Linux distributions and apps.
I wrote many korn/awk/kermit scripts to automate various functions. I had
scripts to monitor programs, disk arrays and server issues which email all
key personal when an issue arises. I also used MRTG to monitor FTP logs,
Cisco firewall and temperature readings.
Migrated and setup Informix 7.3 & 9.4 databases on Solaris 7 and 9. I
utilized Veritas Volume Manager to setup the raw devices to avoid using a
cooked file system. I used fiber channel RAID 10 on a 3510 array to
maximize the database speed. I also used utilities from the International
Informix Users Group including many of Art Kagel's utilities like myschema
and dbcopy. I automated the database tuning using dbstats to avoid lengthy
update statistic processes.
I setup the company email server using Sendmail 8 on Red Hat Enterprise 5
using a Sun 4150 x86 server. The server was also used as the primary DNS
server utilizing Bind 9. I also setup a DHCP and a VPN on Red Hat using
PopTop. I also setup all network shares for PC clients using SAMBA.
I managed and troubleshooted ActionEmco's proprietary electronic ordering
(not EDI) application for receiving purchase orders. I wrote a very
complicated script which monitors all incoming orders and sends emails to
various staff members based on the issue. Prior to my arrival they had no
idea if an order failed. I worked with 3rd party vendors in
troubleshooting all issues. I worked with the programmers to redesign the
application to be more reliable and provided user definable options to
eliminate hard coded features for individual accounts. I also designed and
wrote the FTP specification to modernize the ability to receive orders over
the internet. I also implemented Kermit for any customer using a legacy
system.
Designed and provided sample code to our developers for a PHP/XML
application to perform real time stock checks. Setup Apache 2.x on Solaris
9 with PHP 5.x and used an Informix PDO to perform SQL queries within the
PHP environment.
Designed an interface to integrate VSI-FAX with the Tecsys Elite system.
The interface required several shell scripts that would be invoked from
cron and the distribution system. I also automated an email notification
when faxes did not go through.
Marlboro Computer Corporation (MCORP), Edison, NJ May 1984 - Aug 1995
Director of Research and Development Software developer -
hospitality industry
I was responsible for all programming development, design and maintenance
for ImagInn (Property management system), BAMS/Q-INN (Property management
system for the military) and FSMS (Furnishing Supplies).
Provided training for the technical staff for installing and supporting
UNIX, XENIX and NOVELL Netware systems. I worked frequently with
communication tools - breakout boxes and datascopes, and have a strong
background in installing and troubleshooting PC hard drives, multifunction
cards, modems, network adapters and printers.
I have also installed several Netware and SCO UNIX systems with-in the
Marlboro organization. The network includes Ethernet and Arcnet.
Designed and programmed the ImagInn property management system which is
installed at over 1,000 properties. This system includes front desk,
cashiering, housekeeping, accounts receivable, reports and folio/manager
libraries. I also designed and programmed the following interfaces:
Credit card auths and electronic funds transfer for NaBanco, CES, Transnet
and Nova.
Point of sale interface for Micros, Posi-Touch, Mini-bar and NCR.
PBX interface for Northern Telecom, Hitachi, Mitel, Harris and Digital
Voice.
Movie interface for Spectradyne and Lodgenet.
Central reservations for AMR, Choice, Days Inn, Best Western, Howard
Johnson and Innlink (HIS system).
Call accounting interface that is user definable to work with almost any
system with no custom programming.
Fax module using DIGI-FAX to allow any report within ImagInn to be faxed.
Designed and developed a very flexible verb to allow for a standard pull
down menu and point and shoot tools to standardize a common look within all
applications.
Billeting Automated Management System (BAMS). This system was used by more
than 100 US NAVY installations. It includes PBX and housekeeping
interfaces. This system was originally designed for a DATAPOINT mini
computer system. I completely converted all programs to run on XENIX and
UNIX systems. The conversion included converting random access file
routines to ISAM and overhauling all of the database setup utilities. I
improved the technique of calculating availability and created common sub-
routines to eliminate duplicate code. I also wrote modules to provide
popup windows and scroll bar routines.
Inventory system utilizing Intermec portable bar code readers. I developed
the handheld application using Intermec's IRL language. An interface was
also written to download the data from the reader to UNIX where the file
would be processed to update various files and produce several reports.
I also wrote numerous UNIX shell scripts to aid in installing Marlboro
products, provide automated backup using tar, repair the UNIX print queue
and automated conversion tools for system upgrades.
Creative Applications, Avenel, NJ Nov 1983 - May 1984
Senior programmer Software developer - pager
industry
Developed software for Radio Communication Carriers. Created a system to
send and receive telex messages and stock quotes through WESTERN UNION'S
EASYLINK system. I was also responsible for all system upgrades and
network configurations.
Chase Manhattan Bank, New York, NY June 1981 - Nov 1983
I worked in their Foreign Exchange and Commodity Financing divisions as a
member of their programming staff. I was also responsible for all
Datapoint hardware for the Commodity Financing system. I also wrote
several programs in Applesoft BASIC.
I was also a Shareware author. Below is a list of software packages I have
written:
Clone Invader - Arcade game which is very similar to Space Invaders. This
game is very popular and I have received hundreds of letters and
registrations acknowledging how much they liked the game. Written in
Microsoft Quick BASIC.
Disk Crash - Arcade game. Very popular game which was sold by many
catalog companies.
GQMENU - User definable menu system designed for NETWARE or DOS. It
includes multiple menus, calendar, printer functions, and mouse support.
Written in Quick BASIC.
I also wrote my own graphic editor which was used to design the shapes
used in Disk Crash and Clone Invader. It supports a mouse and uses CGA,
EGA, and VGA graphic modes. It saves the graphic images out in a format
which can be used in C or BASIC.
