EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
Cavalcade Custom Homes LP, Houston, Texas July 2009 – May 2010
Area Construction Superintendent
Conducted a new home construction operation in Houston for a successful Austin builder. Site manager
for the construction of three new home construction ($450 - 650K) projects, and two extensive
remodeling projects. Consolidated management efforts and effectively reduced site overhead by 60%.
• Successfully managed the construction responsibilities for three new projects, and two
projects in progress. Replaced approximately 70% of the sub-contractors and hired more
experienced, more effective crews. Restructuring the crews improved both the quality and cost
performance on the projects.
• Created and implemented a weekly project update program for the builder. The client’s
expectations of visits from Austin to Houston of no less than once a week by the builder.
Commitments in Austin prevented the builder’s weekly visits. To bridge the personal visits, I
created a weekly update for the builder to keep him informed of the production, and estimated
production timelines to completion for the customers. The improved communications and
updates satisfied the client’s expectations and were elated with the improved production process
of their homes.
Rueby Custom Homes, Houston, Texas February 2007 – June 2009
Project Builder
Responsible for the total on-site construction supervision of a very complex, $7M luxury estate residence,
with 15,000 square feet of covered space and 9800 square feet of living space. Managed the project from
the site preparation and excavation phase, to completion and delivery to the client. Effectively managed
all site logistics and scheduling and met regularly with the client. Developed a proprietary energy
monitor and water filtration system for the client, and authored and published Owner’s Operating Manual.
• Devised a change order control process to keep close track of the project . Early on, the
owner stated he did not need change orders, considering it was a cost plus contract, and he valued
what he spent his money on. Devised an email confirmation with the owner to advise him of any
overage from the cost plus budgets. Persuaded the builder to collect for the additional work I
performed outside of the contract obligations, for substantial additional revenue. We kept the
integrity of the contract and satisfied the documentation of the expenditures for the home without
contract conflict.
Chuck Morris Interests, Inc., Houston, Texas May 2006 - February 2007
Project Builder
Initiated the construction from startup to dry-in of a two-story home in Brenham, Texas, with 7,000
square feet of covered space and 4,000 square feet of living space. The 110-page architectural plans were
extremely complex, detailed, and designed according to commercial standards.
• The material specifications required a unique lead time format. Orders were placed as
far away as Italy for the marble exterior and interior stone and Dallas for structural steel. I
devised a projected time line for decisions and order dates. The owners and their managers
accepted the time line, and the project progressed in an orderly manner.
• The ranch has a herd of extremely valuable quarter horse breeding stock in the same
area where we were building their $3M custom home. I coordinated and maintained a
production schedule with the project manager, and on-site ranch hands along with safety
provisions to ensure the security of the horses around the construction site to the satisfaction
of the client.
Christopher Sims Custom Homes, Houston, Texas June 2004 - November 2005
Project Builder
Responsible for the construction of two homes, a custom home in progress, and a spec home in the
exclusive community of Carlton Woods, in The Woodlands.
• Assumed the construction progress of a custom home (10,000 square feet of covered space,
7,000 square feet of living space) from the rough-in phase through completion. The owners
were out of town quite often for extended periods of time. They requested to be kept 90 days in
advance of necessary decisions to avoid logistical delays. I coordinated and held meetings with
all relevant personnel and client, to stay ahead of the production logistics. We had no delays due
to a lack of decisions and strategic planning. The project was completed as scheduled.
John Bass Custom Homes, Houston, Texas July 2002 – May 2004
Project Builder
Responsible for the management of several custom home projects in Memorial and The Woodlands.
• A project in The Woodlands that initiated as a remodel quickly became a rebuild. After the
interior was stripped it became clear that the cost savings gained by remodeling versus rebuilding
was a minimal amount. When the owners were informed, they agreed that a rebuild was the best
approach and they were excited to have a new home, from the slab up for a very nominal
investment.
Mark Hala Construction Co., Inc., Houston, June 1981 – June 2002
Texas
President
As a second generation builder, I founded the company in 1981, managed through the mid 1980 real
estate downturn. Built an average of ten to twelve homes annually. The most homes closed in one year
were 15 homes with 20 in production at any given time and sales volume of up to $7 million.
• The company built homes, and in the process I built a relationship with the real estate
community based on integrity, loyalty, and honesty. Received numerous referrals from
realtors and several included my name in their advertised listings of the homes built by my
company.
• Voted 1997 Builder of the Year by the local builder association, GHBA, and was the President
of the association in 2000.
